NCAA Tournament Bracket
Montclair, NJ – Junior forward
Kaila Fasano (Westwood, NJ, Westwood) scored twice and assisted on two other goals as Montclair State blanked Bowdoin College 7-0 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship on Sunday at MSU Soccer Park.
Freshman
Jennie Hornstra (Clifton, NJ, Clifton) added a goal and two assists as the Red Hawks (20-0-1) advance to the NCAA Sectional Tournament for the first time in program history. Montclair will face the winner of Trinity (TX) and Illinois Wesleyan next weekend at a site and time to be determined. That game will be played on Monday, November 18 after being postponed due to the damaging storms that hit the Midwest on Sunday.
Emory and Wheaton College (IL) will also join Montclair in the Sectional Tournament as the sites will be announced on Monday.
Playing in the dense fog that blanketed MSU Soccer Park throughout the evening, Montclair quickly took control and put the first goal on the board 6:18 into the contest. Hornstra played a ball into the box that bounced once before Fasano flicked a head over the keeper giving Montclair State a 1-0 lead.
The Red Hawks, making their fourth NCAA Tournament appearance, increased the lead to 2-0 with just over five minutes remaining in the first. Junior
Melanie Greco (Bridgewater, NJ, Bridgewater-Raritan) ran down a ball along the left side of the box and crossed a pass in front to sophomore
Martina Landeka (Westfield, NJ, Westfield) who one-timed the ball into the back of the net for her sixth goal of the season.
MSU, which outshot the Polar Bears (12-4-1) 26-5 in the contest, kept up the pressure in the second half and scored 63 seconds in as Fasano and Hornstra again combined on the goal. Hornstra sent a perfect ball through the box on the right side with Fasano finishing the feed for her 11th of the season.
Montclair State tackled on two more goals in a span of 64 seconds. Hornstra netted her seventh of the year putting back a rebound of her own shot at 54:19 and Greco scored off a cross from Fasano pushing the Red Hawks lead to 5-0.
Stefanie Gomes (Kearny, NJ, Kearny) scored at 77:23 and assisted on a goal by
Kendel Bernardini (Elmer, NJ, Schalick) with 3:30 left for the final margin.
Junior
Gina Policastro (East Brunswick, NJ, East Brunswick) made three saves in the first 83 minutes before giving way to
Meghan Calcaterra (Madison, NJ, Madison) who wrapped up Montclair State's 19th shutout in 21 contests this season.
Bridget McCarthy had six saves for Bowdoin.
