Galloway Township, NJ – The Montclair State volleyball team saw it 2013 season come to and on Thursday evening as the fourth-seeded Red Hawks fell to top-seeded Richard Stockton 3-0 in the semifinals of the NJAC Tournament.
Richard Stockton (28-5), the five-time defending champion, won the match 25-12, 25-9, 25-15. The Ospreys will take on No. 2 seeded Rowan University for the NJAC championship on Saturday at 1 pm at home with the winner receiving the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship.
MSU, making its first semifinal appearance since 2009, closed out the year at 19-12 winning 19 matches for the second straight season. The Red Hawks have won 41 matches the past two seasons, its best-two year total in program history.
Seniors
Marta Topor (Bogota, NJ, Bogota) and
Sara Girgus (Green Brook, NJ, Watchung Hills) led the way for Montclair State with four kills apiece while freshman
Rebecca Matasker (Washington Township, NJ, Westwood) added three kills. Setter
Angela Campo (Washington Township, NJ, Westwood) had 16 assists while libero
Kaitlyn Irwin (Cranford, NJ, Cranford) and
Kimberly Butrico (Cresskill, NJ, Cresskill) collected 12 digs apiece.
Senior
Nicole Serekian (Mahwah/Mahwah) led the way with 10 kills while teammates
Ali Giordano (Waldwick/Waldwick) and
Kasey Hennecke (Fair Lawn/Fair Lawn) added eight spikes each. For Giordano the eight kills were a season high.
Stockton jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the first set, forcing the Red Hawks to call a timeout. The Ospreys then pulled away on a 16-6 run to ice the first set. .
Idi Uffen (Williamstown/Williamstown) was dominant at the net, stuffing four of her match-high eight blocks during the frame. Hennecke put away four kills in the stanza. The Ospreys then cruised home during the final two sets with Serekian getting five kills in the second set and Giordano spiking four shots in the final set.
Shannon Clark (Folsom, PA/Ridley) and
Mayan Alvarado (Gainesville, FL/P. K. Yonge) dished 15 and 13 assists respectively for the match while freshman
Lindsay Schuele (Sparta/Sparta) scooped a match-high 15 digs. Schuele and
Macy Schwartz (Mahwah/Mahwah) each added five blocks to Stockton's team total.
