Riverdale, NY – The Montclair State men's and women's swimming and diving teams took on a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference teams on Friday evening as the Red Hawks traveled to Manhattan College to face the host Jaspers along with St. Peter's University.
The MSU women (4-3) came away with a split of the tri-meet as they downed the Jaspers 131-72 while falling to St. Peter's 145-56. Meanwhile the Montclair State men saw their winning streak snapped as they fell to both teams. The Red Hawks (4-4) fell to Manhattan and the Peacocks by scores of 121-82 and 115-86, respectively.
Senior
Michael Smith (Cherry Hill, NJ, Cherry Hill East) won the 200 freestyle for the men as he posted a time of 1:47.81. He also finished second in the 500 freestyle (5:00.50) and then swam the third leg of the 200 freestyle relay team that placed second in a time of 1:31.55. Smith was joined on the quartet by
Brendon Burkett (Egg Harbor Township, NJ, Egg Harbor),
Nick Kalafatis (Cranford, NJ, Cranford) and
Joseph Berry (Edison, NJ, Edison).
Kalafatis was second in the 1000 freestyle registering a time of 10:15.38 while Berry had the same placing in the 100 freestyle (48.93). Berry would finish third in the 50 freestyle (22.79) and
Brian Ubhaus (Jefferson Township, NJ, Jefferson) was third in the 200 individual medley clocking in at 2:05.59.
Nicandro Donadio (Mountainside, NJ, Governor Livingston) was fourth in the same event (2:09.90) with Ubhaus finishing fourth in the 100 backstroke (57.12).
David DuBois (Wayne, NJ, Wayne Valley) was fourth in the 100 breaststroke at 1:04.88.
On the women's side, sophomore
Sydney Stein (Reistertown, MD, Owings Mills) was second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:31.62.
Christine Werner (Livingston, NJ, Livingston) placed second in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.01) and was fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:22.26). Stein was third in the 1000 freestyle (11:22.21) and
Julie Hansen (Berkeley Heights, NJ, Governor Livingston) was third in the 200 freestyle (2:05.16).
Alyson Gawin (Cochranville, PA, Octorara Area) came in third in the 50 freestyle (26.49) and
Katherine LaCava (Milltown, NJ, Mount St. Mary's) had the same finish in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:02.72.
Gabriella Bosa (Freehold, NJ, Freehold Township) was third in the 100 freestyle (57.22) and Jessica Joseph was third in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.26). Gawin,
Tori Holzberg (Ridgewood, NJ, Ridgewood), Bosa and Hansen combined to finish second in the 200 freestyle relay as the squad recorded a time of 1:46.19.
Montclair State is now off until the New Year when it hosts FDU-Florham at the Panzer Athletic Center Pool on Friday, January 3 at 4:00 pm.
