Farmingdale, NY – Sophomore attack
Tierney Conlon (Caldwell, NJ, Caldwell) scored six times and added two assists earning Most Valuable Players honors as second-seeded Montclair State captured its fourth straight Skyline Conference championship with a 16-13 victory over top-seeded Farmingdale State on Saturday, April 27.

Kelly Schoneveld (Denville, NJ, Morris Knolls) added five goals for the Red Hawks (15-3), who tied the single-season record for victories, gave head coach Nicol Parcelluzzi her 100th career win and most importantly sent MSU to the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship for the sixth time in program history. Montclair will learn its NCAA destiny on Sunday, May 5 when selections are announced on NCAA.com.
Nicole Marzocca had five goals for Farmingdale State, which had its 12-game winning streak snapped. The Rams (15-3) had beaten MSU 16-15 at home on April 13 en route to earning the top seed for the tournament.
For the second year in a row, Montclair went into Long Island and came away victorious by the near identical score. Last year Montclair posted a 15-13 win in the title game.
In a game of early streaks, Montclair got the first two goals as Schoneveld and Conlon scored 52 seconds apart for a 2-0 lead. Farmingdale State answered back with three straight goals but that was followed up by a three-goal run from the Red Hawks which led 5-3 on Conlon's second of the game with 16:16 left.
Marzocca and Christy Thoden scored on free-position attempt to tie the game at five however Montclair netted the next four goals, including two by Conlon and the last by
Jenna Bussiere (Dayton, NJ, South Brunswick) for a 9-5 advantage with 5:53 left. Conlon scored once more before the half was over as Montclair led 10-7 at the break.
In the second half, the Rams got a goal by Marzocca trimming the lead to 10-8 but goals by Schoneveld and Bussiere boosted the lead back to 12-8 with 24:41 to go. From there the teams traded goals two at a time with Bussiere and Conlon scoring for the Red Hawks as the lead went to 16-12 with just under six minutes left. Farmingdale would get a goal with 2:47 to play but that would be all the Rams would get as Montclair claimed its seventh Skyline crown.
Bussiere finished with three goals for the Red Hawks, who got a goal and six draws from senior
Kailee Beal (Succasunna, NJ, Roxbury). Schoneveld had three draws with
Stephanie Cantillo (Clifton, NJ, Clifton) forcing a pair of turnovers. Senior goalkeeper
Tiffani Henderson (Landing, NJ, Roxbury) made 10 saves for MSU.
The conference championship capped off an amazing run in the Skyline Conference for Montclair State, which will become a member of the New Jersey Athletic Conference in 2014. One of the original members of the Skyline which formed in 2006, Montclair posted a 55-3 mark in the regular season during its eight-year run with the three losses coming against Farmingdale (2009, 2012, 2013). The Red Hawks made the tournament title game each season and lost just once, falling to the Rams in the 2009 championship game.
