Maura Johnston (Montville, NJ, Montville) scored twice as did senior
Jennifer Tafro (Little Falls, NJ, Passaic Valley) during a six-goal first half as top-ranked Montclair State opened defense of its NJAC title with an 8-0 win over Ramapo College at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.
Senior
Stephanie Lewis (Garwood, NJ, Arthur L. Johnson) added a goal and assist for the Red Hawks, who improved to 7-0 on the year with their 19th straight home win. Montclair upped its record to 11-0 against the Roadrunners (0-6).
Alicia Lyons (Spring Lake Heights, NJ / Manasquan) had eight saves for Ramapo.
The Red Hawks scored four times in game's first 14 minutes, including twice in the opening five as Johnston scored both goals, her fourth and fifth goals of the year. Freshman
Danielle Butrico (South Plainfield, NJ, South Plainfield) put a shot on goal that Lyons made a blocker save on however the ball came back to Butrico who slid the rebound over to Johnston in front for the goal and a 1-0 lead at the 1:51 mark.
Johnston would make it a two-goal advantage three minutes later and Tafro's first with 7:41 gave MSU a 3-0 lead. Tafro, who recorded her team-leading seventh and eighth goals, scored again at 13:55 blasting in a pass from Lewis off a penalty corner.
Senior
Brooke Hullings (Delran, NJ, Delran) extended the lead to 5-0 at 20:38 with her second goal of the year before Lewis capped off the first-half scoring barrage with her first of the year on a penalty stroke with 10:23 left.
Freshman
Gianna Moglino (Holmdel, NJ, Holmdel) knocked in her seventh goal of the year with 6:34 to play in the second half and Abby Erler tallied her first with 2:04 to go for the final margin.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Rebecca Brattole (Clark, NJ, Arthur L. Johnson) made one save – the only shot in the game for Ramapo as Montclair outshot the Roadrunners, 33-1.
Tafro, the NJAC Offensive Player of the Week, continued her climb on the Montclair all-time scoring list as she moved into sole possession of fourth place for points with 87, one behind Sarah Levine (88 from 2003-06) and two behind former teammate Deana Hagel (89 from 2007-10). She also tied Judy DeMarco for fifth place on the goals list with 34.
Freshman Emily Kramer (West Windsor, NJ / WW-Plainsboro South) had six saves for Ramapo as she played the final 35 minutes.
The Red Hawks return to action on Saturday, September 21 as it hosts Cortland at 11:00 am.
