No. 2 Field Hockey Rolls Past Alvernia 5-0 Behind Moglino's Four-Goal Performance

Johnston Goal, Assist as Red Hawks Win 18th Straight Home Game

Montclair, NJ – Freshman Gianna Moglino (Holmdel, NJ, Holmdel) tied a Montclair State single-game record with four goals lifting the second-ranked Red Hawks to 5-0 victory over Alvernia University at Sprague Field on Saturday.

Sophomore Maura Johnston (Montville, NJ, Montville) had a goal and assist with senior midfielder Jennifer Tafro (Little Falls, NJ, Passaic Valley) picking up two assists as the Red Hawks posted their 18th consecutive home victory while also moving to 3-0 all-time against the Crusaders (1-2).

Goalkeepers Erin Wunsch (West Lawn, PA / Wilson High School) and Rebecca Brosius (Drexel Hill, PA / Archbishop Carroll) had eight saves apiece for Alvernia, which dropped its second straight, both to ranked teams. The Crusaders fell to No. 7 Franklin & Marshall in its previous contest.

Moglino registered a natural hat trick scoring the first three goals as she tied the MSU single-game mark accomplished six times before the last coming by Jennifer Tanis against New Paltz on October 5, 2006.

Montclair State jumped on top quickly with Moglino netting her first goal 4:35 into the contest. Johnston fired a shot from the left side that Wunsch stopped. However the ball bounced out to Moglino who banged in the rebound for the Red Hawks' early 1-0 advantage.  She would add to the lead in similar fashion less than four minutes later putting back a saved shot by Brooke Hullings (Delran, NJ, Delran).

MSU, which outshot Alvernia 33-2 in the game, has several more chances to widen the lead however Wunsch came up with several saves, including three straight on a flurry by MSU in the 23rd minute and the Crusaders were also helped out a the Red Hawks hit the post on another occasion.

Moglino collected the hat trick with 59 seconds to play in the opening half when Johnston slipped a pass from the left side into the middle to Moglino who finished off the feed for a 3-0 Red Hawks lead at the break.

Johnston would get a goal of her own 84 seconds into the second half tipping in a shot by Tafro from the top of the circle. Moglino capped off her outstanding day 10 minutes later putting home a pass from Tafro with 23:36 left in the game.

Goalkeepers Rebecca Brattole (Clark, NJ, Arthur L. Johnson) and Kaitlin Wintersteen (Washington, NJ, Warren Hills) combined on the shutout with Brattole making one save in the first 61:58 of the game.

The Red Hawks return to action on Wednesday, September 11 traveling to New Paltz, NY to face SUNY New Paltz at 4:00 pm. Alvernia is home on Tuesday taking on Misericordia at 7:00 pm.
