Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 22 Women's Soccer Blanks Centenary as Gibson, Sullivan Each Score Twice

Red Hawks Down Cyclones for 3-0 Start

Montclair, NJ – Junior forward Francesca Gibson (Cape May, NJ, Lower Cape May Regional) scored twice as did freshman Erin Sullivan (Bridgewater, NJ, Bridgewatwer-Raritan) as Montclair State, ranked No. 22 in Division III, improved to 3-0 with a 5-0 victory over Centenary College at MSU Soccer Park on Saturday.

Junior Kaila Fasano (Westwood, NJ, Westwood) had a goal for Montclair, which is off to a 3-0 start for just the second time in program history. MSU also won its first three games in 2011.

Gibson put the Red Hawks on the board in the game's sixth minute. Senior Jenna Carroll (East Brunswick, NJ, East Brunswick) collected a miss clearing pass by the Cyclones and fed Gibson, who put a shot into the back of the net for her second goal of the season.

The lead was pushed to 2-0 at 15:22 when Sullivan recorded her first career goal, blasting in a free kick from just outside the left side of the penalty area. Fasano rounded out the scoring in the first half for the Red Hawks volleying in a pass from Stefanie Gomes (Kearny, NJ, Kearny)from 10 yards out as Montclair State led 3-0 at the break.

That scoring would be more than MSU, which has won 11 of its 13 meetings with the Cyclones, would need as it held Centenary without a shot, the second straight game in which the Red Hawks held the opposition without an attempt.

Gibson added her second goal six minutes into the second half before Sullivan scored again with 14:12 remaining for the final margin.

Junior Gina Policastro (East Brunswick, NJ, East Brunswick) and sophomore Amanda Vietri (Dumont, NJ, Dumont) combined on the shutout for MSU, which has outscored its opponents 15-0 in three games this season.

The Red Hawks return to action on Monday, September 9 as it travels to Madison, NJ to take on FDU-Florham at 7:00 pm.
