Union, NJ - Senior forward
Ordel Goldson (Hackettstown, NJ, Warren Hills) recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 36 points and 16 rebounds however Montclair State dropped its second straight as the Red Hawks fell at Kean University 81-72 on Saturday.
Senior guard
Daniel Singleton (Neptune, NJ, Neptune) had 14 points and sophomore guard
Angel Gonzalez (Ocala, FL, Meadowbrook Academy) chipped in with 13 for MSU, which fell to 6-9 overall, 3-6 in the NJAC.
Goldson scored 16 and Singleton 14 in the first half as Montclair State grabbed a 34-33 halftime lead. In a closely contested first half, the Red Hawks grabbed a 28-22 lead with 6:14 remaining on Goldson's jumper. Kean would take the lead as Ali Mix drained a three-pointer making the score 29-28 however Gonzalez's jumper at the other end put MSU back on top.
Michael Burton hit two from the line for the Cougars for a 31-30 Kean lead but Singleton tipped in a missed shot and
Michael Spence (Irvington, NJ, Manchester Regional) connected twice from the foul line which helped MSU take the one-point lead at the break.
In the second half, a Goldson layup put Montclair State in front, 40-35 with 15:13 left however Mix scored seven straight points to put Kean in the lead 42-40. After the teams traded points, Gonzalez drained a three with 11:16 for a 49-47 lead however a Burton three followed by a layup by Emmanuel Omowole put the Cougars in front for good.
The Red Hawks would get within a point several times, the last coming at 58-57 on a free throw by Singleton however Burton hit from behind the arc and Mix added a layup for a 63-57 Kean lead with 7:11 left.
Mix finished with 29 points for Kean (9-5, 5-4 NJAC) while Burton collected 18. Kyle Latorre added nine points and 11 rebounds for the Cougars.
Chris Torres (Oakland, NJ, Indian Hills) grabbed 11 rebounds for Montclair State.
MSU stays on the road traveling to Glassboro, NJ on Wednesday, January 22 for an 8:00 pm matchup with Rowan University.
