Meet Results
Glassboro, NJ – After two-week hiatus from dual meet competition, the Montclair State men's and women's swimming and diving teams returned to action in a New Jersey Athletic Conference meet at Rowan University on Saturday.
Sophomore
Sydney Stein (Reistertown, MD, Owings Mills) won twice however the Red Hawk women fell to the Profs 165-129 falling to 5-4 on the season 0-2 in the NJAC. Meanwhile MSU got wins from seniors
Michael Smith (Cherry Hill, NJ, Cherry Hill East) and
Joseph Berry (Edison, NJ, Edison) in a 185-101 defeat. The Montclair State men are now 5-5 overall, 0-2 in the league.
For the men, Smith won the 200 freestyle as he edged out Berry for first place. Smith posted a time of 1:46.13 with Berry touching in at 1:46.88. Berry later collected his win in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:02.31 and also was second in the 50 freestyle at 22.29 seconds. Smith also had a pair of second-place finishes in the 100 freestyle (50.16) and 500 freestyle (4:57.26).
Freshman
Nick Kalafatis (Cranford, NJ, Cranford) finished second in the 1000 freestyle coming in at 10:20.88 and
Brian Ubhaus (Jefferson Township, NJ, Jefferson) was second in the 200 backstroke (2:12.08).
David DuBois (Wayne, NJ, Wayne Valley) and
Richard Sang (Stockholm, NJ, Vernon) also had second place finishes in the 200 breaststroke (2:26.18) and 100 butterfly (57.59), respectively.
Stein swept the long distance freestyle events once again taking the 1000 free in a time of 11:08.13 before edging out teammate
Katherine LaCava (Milltown, NJ, Mount St. Mary's) in the 500 free (5:26.68). LaCava, who swam 5:27.11 in the 500 free, earned a win in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:16.57.
Jessica Joseph (Brick, NJ, Brick Township) was a winner in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.81) and freshman
Tori Holzberg (Ridgewood, NJ, Ridgewood) captured the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:20.54. Sophomore
Julie Hansen (Berkeley Heights, NJ, Governor Livingston) made it five individual wins by the Red Hawks taking top honors in the 100 butterfly (1:02.30).
Elsewhere, freshman
Alyson Gawin (Cochranville, PA, Octorara Area) was second in the 50 freestyle (26.33) and 100 backstroke (1:05.12). Hansen also placed second in the 100 freestyle (57.52) and
Kathleen French (Cranford, NJ, Cranford) was second in the 200 breaststroke posting a time of 2:34.66.
The men's team returns to action with dual meets at New Jersey Institute of Technology on Monday (January 20) followed by a home meet with Vassar on Wednesday January 22) with both meets beginning at 6:00 pm. Both teams come together on Saturday, January 25 for another NJAC meet this one at Ramapo College.
