Meet Results
Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State women's swimming and diving team clinched a winning season while the men fell one event shy of victory as the Red Hawks split their NJAC dual meet with Ramapo College at the Panzer Athletic Center Pool on Saturday.
The meet was originally scheduled to be in Mahwah but was moved on to Montclair on Friday evening after a malfunctioning boiler in Ramapo's Bradley Center caused the pool water at to drop to below normal temperatures.
Sophomore
Katherine LaCava (Milltown, NJ, Mount St. Mary's) won three individual events while classmate
Julie Hansen (Berkeley Heights, NJ, Governor Livingston) added two of her own and a relay victory as MSU knocked off the Roadrunners 161-97. Montclair improved to 6-4 overall, while picking up its first NJAC win (1-2).
Meanwhile the men got three wins from freshman
Nick Kalafatis (Cranford, NJ, Cranford) however their comeback bid fell short in a 135-127 loss to the Roadrunners. MSU fell to 7-6 overall, 0-3 in the conference.
LaCava won the 200 freestyle (2:04.33), 200 butterfly (2:16.99) and the 500 freestyle (5:30.54) with Hansen taking top honors in the 100 freestyle (57.73) and 100 butterfly (1:02.40). Hansen then swam the third leg of the 400 freestyle relay team that won in a time of 3:53.81. Hansen, who also placed second in the 200 freestyle (2:05.43), was joined in that relay by
Gabriella Bosa (Freehold, NJ, Freehold Township),
Sydney Stein (Reistertown, MD, Owings Mills) and
Tori Holzberg (Ridgewood, NJ, Ridgewood).
Stein captured the 1000 freestyle in a time of 11:27.77 and
Jessica Joseph (Brick, NJ, Brick Township) took first in the 100 breaststroke.
Alyson Gawin (Cochranville, PA, Octorara Area) led a 1-2-3 MSU finish in the 50 freestyle swimming 26.69.
Kathleen French (Cranford, NJ, Cranford) and Joseph were 2-3 respectively in times of 27.04 and 27.11 seconds. Senior K
Kelsie Donahue (Egg Harbor, NJ, Egg Harbor Township) won the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:19.37 and French took top honors in the 200 breaststroke (2:34.54).
Kalafatis took first in the 1000 freestyle clocking in at 10:29.79 and picked up his second win in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:03.44. He then made it a sweep of the butterfly winning the 100 event in 55.51 seconds.
Michael Smith (Cherry Hill, NJ, Cherry Hill East) won a pair of events taking the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:03.61 after having won the 200 freestyle earlier in the meet with a time of 1:46.10. Smith edged out fellow senior
Joseph Berry (Edison, NJ, Edison), who swam 1:48.05 for the top spot. Berry came back to win the 100 freestyle posting a time of 48.57 seconds.
Montclair trailed 129-116 heading into the final event, the 400 freestyle relay. MSU needed to sweep the top 3 places for a victory. The Red Hawks would get the first spot as Smith,
Nicandro Donadio (Mountainside, NJ, Governor Livingston), Kalafatis and Berry swam 3:20.11 to take first place however the Roadrunners swept the next two positions to win the meet.
The Red Hawks have one final dual meet before heading into championship season. Montclair State hosts local rival William Paterson on Saturday, February 1 at the Panzer Athletic Center. It will be Senior Day for MSU's six seniors – Berry, Smith,
