Montclair, NJ – Junior
Kendel Bernardini (Elmer, NJ) and sophomore
Jennie Hornstra (Clifton, NJ) each collected second-half goals as No. 12/16 Montclair State extended its winning streak to nine games with a 2-0 win over William Paterson University at MSU Soccer Park on Wednesday evening.
Seniors
Kerry Glynn (Old Bridge, NJ) and
Melanie Greco (Bridgewater, NJ) each recorded assists as the Red Hawks upped their record to 9-1 with their ninth consecutive shutout. Montclair State also took the lead in the all-time series between the two local rivals at 13-12-1.
The Red Hawks and Pioneers went toe-to-toe in the first 45 minutes with five shots apiece. Both teams would get chances to score however all of the attempts were thwarted by WPU keeper Angela Sandelli (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) and MSU's
Gina Policastro (East Brunswick, NJ) as each made a pair of routine saves to keep the game scoreless. William Paterson also had all four corner kicks taken in the first 45 minutes.
In the second half, the Red Hawks shutdown the Pioneers offensively holding the visitors without an attempt getting off 11 shots of their own.
The first of those 11 shots would prove to be the difference maker as Bernadini, who was inserted into the lineup to start the second half, immediately paid dividends scoring her first of the season at the 53:52 mark. Glynn put through a ball from 25 yards on the left side on to the foot of Bernardini who went 1-on-1 with Sandelli before chipping a shot inside the right post for the 1-0 MSU advantage.
The Red Hawks kept the pressure up and nearly added to the lead as Greco had a point-blank shot eight minutes later that caromed off the crossbar. Forty-eight seconds later, Montclair extended its lead as Hornstra, the NJAC Offensive Player of the Week, registered her sixth goal of the year banging in a cross from Greco at 62:29.
Policastro finished with the two saves as she earned her ninth shutout of the season 37
th of her career while also becoming the all-time winningest goalkeeper in MSU history with her 56
th career victory. Policastro surpassed Stephanie Romanko (1999-2002) for that mark as she upped her career record to 56-9-6.
Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, October 4 with a big New Jersey Athletic Conference contest in Ewing, NJ against No. 10 The College of New Jersey. It will be a rematch of last year's NJAC Championship Game which was a scoreless draw with the Lions claiming the league title in penalty kicks.
