MADISON MAUTE collected 15 kills along with five blocks as the Montclair State volleyball team set a new single-season mark for victories following a split of their two matches at the New York Regional Challenge at Stevens on Friday.
The Red Hawks (23-9) fell to Rochester in three sets in their first match before coming back to post a four-set win over Rochester Institute of Technology. The win was the 23rd of the year for Montclair State, surpassing the previous record of 22 set in 2007 and equaled in 2012.
Maute estbalished a season-high for kills as the Red Hawks also got nine apice from
HAYLEY MERRILL along with
COURTNEY MATLOCK.
MELISSA TERPSTRA and
COURTNEY LEPORE had five each as MSU won the match 25-22, 25-23, 22-25, 25-22.
Setter Angela campo totaled 38 assists along with 11 digs while
SAMANTHA SZURA and Terpstra led Montclair State with 13 digs apiece.
ELISE BRACKETT and Terpstra notched two service aces each.
Earlier in the day, Montclair State fell to University of Rochester in three sets. Maute and LePore had five kills apiece as the Red Hawks fell 25-20, 25-14, 25-13.
Against the Yellow Jackets, the Red Hawks found themselves tied at 15-15 before three attack errors by MSU along with an ace by Rochester's Hanna Gira made the score 19-15. Montclair State would hold off a pair of match points as Maute put down a set from Campo making the score 24-20 however Aimee Kohler recorded a kill on the ensuing serve as Rochester took a 1-0 lead with the 25-20 victory.
Rochester used a six-point spurt early in the second set to grab a 10-5 lead and another four-point run behind the serving of Xiaoyi Li extended the lead to 15-6. The teams would virtually trade points the remainder of the way before Li set up Anna MacDonald for the final points in a 25-14 win and 2-0 advantage in the match.
Maute gave Montclair a 3-2 lead in the third set before the Yellow Jackets recorded five of the next six points to go in front 7-4 on a kill by Jennie Ford. The lead grew to 18-11 on a ball-handling error by MSU and Rochester eventually closed out the set and match on a kill by Gira.
Terpstra had four kills and 13 digs while Campo added 19 assists while
LILY SCANZILLO collected a team-best 17 digs.
The Red Hawks will finish their appearance at the New York Regional Challenge in addition to closing out its regular-season schedule on Saturday, November 1 against Nazareth and Stevens at 10:00 am and 4:00 pm, respectively.
