No. 10/11 Women's Basketball Holds Off Lewis & Clark for Second Straight West Coast Win, 53-48

Melissa Tobie Scores 20 as Red Hawks Move to 2-0

Portland, OR – Senior forward MELISSA TOBIE scored 20 points, grabbed nine rebounds and added four assists and three steals as No. 10/11 Montclair State knocked off host Lewis and Clark in the Bon Apetit NWC Classic on Sunday.

Senior guard JANITZA AQUINO had 12 points for the Red Hawks (2-0) who held off a rally in the end by the Pioneers.

MSU scored the first 10 points of the game as Aquino and KATE TOBIE converted layups in the first 14 seconds of the game. Guard KATIE SIRE added a layup off the break with Aquino sinking two from the line for an 8-0 lead before MELISSA TOBIE capped the game-opening run on a layup with 17:25 left.

A three-pointer by MELISSA TOBIE with 10:24 remaining in the opening half gave MSU its largest lead at 22-5. Lewis and Clark would cut the lead back to 10 points with seven minutes remaining and the Red Hawks settled for a 33-22 lead at the break.

In the second half, the Pioneers got the deficit to 37-29 however a three-pointer by KAYLA CEBALLOS and layup on the break by KATE TOBIE boosted the MSU lead back to 45-31 with 14:07 remaining. Montclair would hold on to its double digit lead and held a 49-37 lead before L&C scored the next 11 points to get within 49-48 with 2:29 left.

Ceballos drained a jumper with 1:59 to go giving MSU some breathing room and after misses on each side over the next minute-plus, MELISSA TOBIE came up with a block with 21 seconds to play. She hit both free throws sealing the game for MSU.

Ceballos finished with eight points and three rebounds while Sire had six points and three boards. SAGE BENNETT collected three points and five rebounds.

Montclair State is now off until Saturday, November 22 when the two-time defending conference champions open up its NJAC schedule. Montclair will be in Ewing to face The College of New Jersey at 1:00 pm. MSU and TCNJ were selected 1-2 respectively in the NJAC Preseason Poll.
