LAVRONE GREEN scored 19 points however College of Staten Island used a sizzling shooting performance in the second half as the Dolphins knocked off Montclair State 87-74 on Saturday afternoon.
CSI's Will Fonseca scored 31 points as the Dolphins (3-2) shot 65 percent (17-of-26) over the final 20 minutes to earn their third straight victory in the series and fourth in the last five meetings with MSU.
Montclair State trailed 40-39 at the break but took the lead 19 seconds into the final half as Jarett Bogus drained a three-pointer. After a CSI basket,
KEVIN MCGORRY connected twice from the line to give the Red Hawks the lead again. But Frank Schettino answered as Staten Island and the game would be tied again at 53-53 with 15:43 left as Bogus again connected from behind the arc.
Staten Island then went on a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to take control. Fonseca had the final eight points in the spurt as CSI led 62-53 with 12:13 to go. The lead would grow to 11 before Montclair State eventually closed the gap to 77-74 on a layup by McGorry with 4:20 remaining. But those would be the last points MSU would get as the Dolphins rattled off the final 10 points. Meanwhile MSU was 0-for-4 with three turnovers in its final seven possessions.
Bogus finished with 15 points and five rebounds for MSU which got 10 points and three rebounds from McGorry. Montclair shot just 21-of-63 from the floor (33.3 percent), including 9-of-27 in the second half.
DANIEL RODRIGUEZ chipped in with seven points and five rebounds.
Montclair State is back in action on Wednesday, December 3 as it plays its home opener at the Panzer Athletic Center against Rutgers-Newark. Tipoff of the NJAC contest is scheduled for 8:00 pm.
