Koster's Penalty Kick Goal Lifts No. 8 Women's Soccer Past Rowan into NJAC Championship Game, 1-0

Red Hawks Top Profs, Face TCNJ for Conference Crown, NCAA Automatic Bid

Montclair, NJ – On Wednesday morning, senior MELISSA KOSTER picked up a major award from the NJAC as she was chosen the Midfielder of the Year. Wednesday evening she collected an even bigger prize.

Koster, a First-Team All-NJAC selection, scored on a penalty kick with 2:12 remaining in the first half lifting top-seeded and No. 8 Montclair State to a 1-0 victory over fourth-seeded Rowan University in the semifinals of the 2014 New Jersey Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championship at MSU Soccer Park.

Senior goalkeeper GINA POLICASTRO made a pair of saves for her 14th shutout of the season as the Red Hawks (17-1-1) advanced to the league title game for the third consecutive season. Montclair will host second-seeded and 12th-ranked The College of New Jersey on Saturday, November 8 at 6:00 pm.

It will be a rematch of last year's NJAC Championship Game which went scoreless with TCNJ claiming he title in penalty kicks. It will mark the fifth time that the two will battle for the conference crown and automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship and the ninth time overall in the NJAC Tournament.  MSU, which is making its third straight NJAC Tournament finals appearance, is 0-2-2 in those championship contests falling in 2002 and 2003. The Red Hawks claimed the 2004 NJAC title in penalty kicks following a 0-0 tie.

Sophomore goalkeeper Carleigh Trivino (Caldwell, NJ / Caldwell) made 12 saves for Rowan, which fell to 12-6-1 on the year.

MSU, which played to a 1-1 draw with the Profs on October 11, got several early chances for the game's first goal only to be denied by Trivino, who knocked away at shot by FRANCESCA GIBSON in the third minute of the contest and snared a pair of shots 10 minutes later to keep the game scoreless. Trivino's fourth save was a spectacular one, a diving save to her left that stopped a shot by MARTINA LANDEKA at the 20:12 mark.

Policastro made her two stops past the midpoint of the opening half, pulling in a line drive shot by Danielle Macey (Cinnaminson, NJ / Cinnaminson) in the 28th minute before saving a shot from Erika Suhl (Brick, NJ / Brick) Memorial 10 minutes later.

Late in the first half, Montclair's JENNIE HORNSTRA was taken down deep inside the penalty area and the Red Hawks were awarded the penalty kick. Koster, who earlier this season converted on a kick at Stevens, found the back of the net again for what turned out to be the game's only goal.

In the second half, the Red Hawks outshot the Profs 9-1 and had great opportunities to extend it lead however Trivino came up with several outstanding saves, including an all-out dive to her left in the 72nd minute that prevented a blast from just outside the box by CATHERINE ZYSK from going in.

Montclair State outshot the Profs 21-7 in the contest with Rowan taking four of the seven corner kicks in the match.
