No. 14 Men's Lacrosse Pulls Away From Ursinus in Final Period for 18-11 Victory

Red Hawks Outscore Bears 6-0; Morrissey Five Goals, Four Assists.

Montclair, NJ – Senior attack Sam Morrissey (Hackettstown, NJ, West Morris Central) scored five goals and added four assists as 14th-ranked Montclair State pulled away in the fourth period for an 18-11 victory over Ursinus College at Sprague Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Sophomore Brett Mangan (Maplewood, NJ, Columbia) added four goals and two assists as the unbeaten Red Hawks (5-0) outscored the Bears (2-2) 6-0 in the final period to turn a one-goal contest into a seven-score victory. Wednesday's game was the second meeting between the teams with Ursinus posting a 10-8 win in Collegeville, PA last season.

Sophomore attack Logan Panaccione (Hillsborough, NJ / Hillsborough) had three goals and an assist for the Bears, who dropped their second straight contest.

The Red Hawks led 12-9 with under 10 minutes remaining as Mangan collected his third goal of the game off a feed from Morrissey however Mike Durst (Fairfax, VA / Oakton) scored with five minutes to go and Panaccione's third with 1:15 to play pulled Ursinus within 12-11 heading into the fourth.

But MSU would do all the scoring in the final period as it outshot the Bears, 16-5. Sophomore Don Finn (Wall, NJ, Christian Brothers Academy), the Skyline Conference Player of the Week, starting things off with a goal at 4:41 of the period and Mangan followed 30 seconds later on the man-advantage for a 14-11 lead. Morrissey scored at the midpoint of the period and his next goal 42 seconds later put MSU in front 16-11 with 6:49 to go.

Sophomore Zach Schreck (Flemington, NJ, Hunterdon Central) tacked on another 34 seconds later finishing off a feed from his brother Michael Schreck (Flemington, NJ, Hunterdon Central) for the six-goal advantage. Zach Schreck accounted for the final scored with 3:21 left.

Mangan gave the Red Hawks a 1-0 lead early in the first period, however Steve Smyrl (Glen Mills, Pa. / Garnet Valley), who finished with two goals , scored man-up and goals by Panaccione and Mark Stratton (Lititz, Pa. / Manheim Township) put the Bears up 3-1. Michael Schreck and Mangan countered with goals for MSU as the game was tied 3-3 after one period.

Midfielder Patrick O'Donaghue (Whitehouse Station, Hunterdon Central) gave the Bears a 5-4 lead with 10-plus minutes left in second before Mangan assisted on goals by Finn and Morrissey and with defenseman Ryan Totin (Jackson, NJ, Jackson Memorial) adding a goal as Montclair State led 7-5. The teams traded the final four goal of the half as Montclair led 9-7 at the break.

Zach Schreck extended the lead to 10-7 1:19 into the third however Panaccione and Smyrl scored 14 seconds apart getting Ursinus within 10-9. Morrissey and Mangan answered with goals for Montclair State making the score 12-9 before Ursinus got back to a goal at the period's end.

Senior All-America goalkeeper Michael Dorn (Blairstown, NJ, North Warren) stopped 14 shots for the Red Hawks, who got 14 faceoff wins from Brad Pietrucha (Bridgewater, NJ, Bridgewater-Raritan). Michael Schreck led the team with six ground balls while defenseman Kiel Dietrich (Andover, NJ, Newton) posted five ground balls and four caused turnovers.

Brian Neff (Ephrata, Pa. / Ephrata) stopped eight shots for the Bears, who also got two goals and two assists from Mike Neal (Shelby Township, Mich. / De La Salle). James Fairchild (Wayne, PA / Malvern Prep) won 13 faceoffs and added three ground balls. Zach Jones (Garnet Valley, PA / Garnet Valley) led the team with five ground balls.

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, March 15 when it hosts 13th-ranked St. Mary's College (MD) at Sprague Field beginning at 1:00 pm.
