Women's Basketball Falls One Game Short in Final Four Bid as FDU-Florham Tops MSU, 73-53

Red Hawks Close Out Sensational Season at 28-3

Madison, NJ – The Montclair State women's basketball dream of reaching the Final Four of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament fell one game short on Saturday evening as the Red Hawks fell to undefeated FDU-Florham, 73-53 at the Ferguson Center.

Junior forward Melissa Tobie (Elizabeth, NJ, Roselle Catholic) registered her 12th double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds however it was a key second-half run by the Devils which earned FDU-Florham (31-0) a spot in next week's Final Four in Stevens Point, Wisconsin.

For MSU, the loss concluded another outstanding campaign as Montclair finished the year at 28-3 which included its second straight New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship and the program's furthest advancement in the NCAA Tournament as it reached the Elite 8. Over the past two seasons, Montclair has registered an amazing 57-4 record, including 33-1 in the NJAC while being ranked in the Top 10 of both the D3Hoops.com and USA Today Sports Division III polls.

Junior guard Jenny Malone (North Plainfield, NJ, Roselle Catholic) had nine points in the first half as Montclair State led 30-24 at halftime and took an eight-point lead a minute into the second half as Nicosia Henry (Bolingbrook, IL, Bolingbrook) drained a three to make the score 33-25.

But that would the last field goal the Red Hawks would get for over 10 minutes as FDU-Florham capitalized on the cold shooting by MSU to the tune of a 25-5 run that gave the Devils a 50-38 lead with 8:32 remaining when Tobie ended the field goals drought with a layup. During that time, Montclair was 0-for-8 from the field and turned the ball over three times.

It was then a matter of playing catch-up for remainder of the game by MSU, which never got closer than the 12-point margin the rest of the way.

Tobie finished with five blocks and five steals as the 11 points gave her 579 for the season, the fifth-highest single-season total in MSU history and the most since Tracey Brown scored 585 during the 1982-83 campaign. She also became the first player in program history to score 500 points, grab 250 rebounds and record 100 assists, 70 blocks and 70 steals in a season. Tobie also surpassed the 1,500-point mark for her career which is currently fifth-best on the all-time MSU list.

Henry finished with six points and seven rebounds ending a tremendous two seasons for the Red Hawks in which she was twice named the NJAC's Defensive Player of the Year. Henry finished with 666 points and 470 rebounds while amassing 209 steals, which currently ranked 14th on the MSU list.
