Hill Perfect, Rustemeyer Drives in Eight as No. 3 Softball Sweeps Past Centenary in Home Opener

Red Hawks Now 9-1 Following 4-0 and 12-1 Victories

Montclair, NJ – Senior righthander Alex Hill (Parsippany, NJ, Parsippany Hills) posted the 10th perfect game in Montclair State history, striking out a single-game record 18 batters in opener while junior Melissa Rustemeyer (Colonia, NJ, Colonia) had two home runs and five RBI in the nightcap as No. 3 Montclair State swept past Centenary College 4-0 and 12-1 at the MSU Softball Stadium on Saturday.

Rustemeyer drove in three runs in the first game as the Red Hawks upped their record to 9-1 while extending their winning streak to four games.

Hill (7-1) recorded her third career perfect game while breaking her own school mark for punch outs which she set last season at Ramapo. She fanned the first nine batters she faced and then added seven in a row from the fourth through sixth innings before striking out the final two batters in the seventh.

Hill, who also recorded perfect games against Rutgers-Camden in 2011 and Hunter College last season, picked up her 94th career victory which is 13th on the all-time NCAA Division III list while her 18 K's increased her career total to 1,049, currently ninth all-time. In addition, Hill registered her 49th career shutout tying her with Molly Rathburn of Eastern Connecticut for fifth all-time in Division III history.

After striking out the side in the first inning, Montclair gave Hill all the offensive support she would need in the bottom half. Freshman rightfielder Lauren Guillen (Secaucus, NJ, Secaucus) singled with one out and Dana Amato (Hillsdale, NJ, Pascack Valley) followed with a base hit. Following a fly out, Rustemeyer drilled a double up the left-center gap scoring both runs for a 2-0 lead.

Montclair added its final runs in the fifth. Brooke Powers (Newton, NJ, Pope John XXIII) led off with a double and went to third on a wild pitch before coming home on Guillen's RBI ground out. Amato kept the inning going with a double and scored on Rustemeyer's run-scoring single with two outs.

Powers, Guillen, Amato and Rustemeyer all had two hits each accounting for the eight in the game by Montclair State.

The Red Hawk bats would do damage in the second game scoring six times in the bottom of the first.  Amato blasted a two-run homer to centerfield for the first two runs and Rustemeyer made it back-to-back jacks for a 3-0 lead. Melany Zeller (Bloomfield, NJ, Bloomfield) doubled and came home on triple by Brianna Davidson (Monroe Township, NJ , Monroe Township). Tara Petrucelli (Nutley, NJ, Nutley) added an RBI single for 5-0 with Jaclyn Allegretta (Hackensack, NJ, Hackensack) plating the final run with an RBI single.

Montclair tacked on three more runs in the second, including an RBI double by Rustemeyer, who was 3-for-3, and sacrifice fly by Davidson and added three more in the third on Rustemeyer's second round-tripper of the game, a three-run shot the opposite way over the right field fence.

Righthander Alison Cullen (Branchburg, NJ, Immaculata) was the recipient of the run support as she picked up her second win of the year (2-0). Cullen struck out three and allowed just two hits.Brianna Creegan (Union, NJ, Union) recorded the final two outs, striking out one.

Powers had two hits for the Red Hawks in the second contest.
