No. 3 Softball Keeps Rolling as Red Hawks Shut Out Hunter in Twinbill Sweep

MSU Runs Winning Streak to Eight with 4-0, 1-0 Victories

Montclair, NJ – Senior righthander Alex Hill (Parsippany, NJ, Parsippany Hills) recorded her third consecutive shutout in the opener while senior third baseman Dana Amato (Hillsdale, NJ, Pascack Valley) provided all the scoring in the nightcap with a solo home run as No. 3 Montclair State pushed its winning streak to eight with a sweep of Hunter College on Tuesday.

Junior shortstop Brianna Davidson (Monroe Township, NJ , Monroe Township) had a pair of RBI in the first game for the Red Hawks (13-1), who posted wins of 4-0 and 1-0.

Hill (9-1) allowed two hits, struck out 10 and faced one batter over the minimum in registering her seventh shutout in nine starts this season. Only two baserunners would reach, one coming in the first inning as freshman Taylor Crofts (East Yaphank, NY / Longwood) doubled with one out however she was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple by leftfielder Brooke Powers (Newton, NJ, Pope John XXIII).

Hill retired nine straight after the hit carrying that through to the fifth when junior Meghan O'Shea (Deer Park, NY / High School East) flared a single into right field. She then set down the final nine in a row, including strikeouts of five of the last six batters in the game.

Meanwhile Montclair got all the run support they needed in the first inning. Powers led off with a double and scored as Amato singled into center. The Red Hawks loaded the bases with one out and scored again as Davidson bounced into a fielder's choice scoring Amato for a 2-0 advantage.

Davidson would drive in a run in similar fashion in the third and MSU got its final run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by rightfielder Jaclyn Allegretta (Hackensack, NJ, Hackensack).

Powers, Amato and NJAC Player of the Week Melissa Rustemeyer each had two hits for the Red Hawks, who had 10 in the first contest.

Amato accounted for the only scoring in the second game with her fifth home of the season, a solo shot with two out in the third. It was also the 31st of her career putting her all alone in second place on the all-time MSU list for round-trippers.

In between it was a pitcher's duel between Hunter's Erika Colangelo (Islip, NY / Islip) and Montclair State's Alison Cullen (Branchburg, NJ, Immaculata). Cullen, who improved to 4-0, allowed two hits in 4 2/3 innings, walking three and fanning two while Colangelo, who fell to 1-2, gave up seven hits with four walks and a pair of strikeouts.

After Amato's home run, the Hawks had a chance to tie the game in the fifth as it loaded the bases on a pair of walks and an infield single. However that chance was squashed as Hill came on and got a ground out to end the inning and then recorded the next six outs for her second save of the year and the 11th of her career, a new MSU record. Hill broke the mark of 10 held by Elia Persico (2007-2010).

Davidson was 2-for-3 for Montclair State.

The Red Hawks are back in action on Thursday, March 27 as they host Farmingdale State at 3:00 pm.
