Kelly Schoneveld (Denville, NJ, Morris Knolls) continued her torrid scoring pace with five goals and an assist as Montclair State picked up a huge win on two fronts as the Red Hawks knocked off Rowan 14-11 on Saturday afternoon.
Junior attack
Tierney Conlon (Caldwell, NJ, Caldwell) added three goals and two assists for the Red Hawks, who remained unbeaten improving to 13-0 overall (3-0 in the NJAC) while beating the Profs for just the third time in 22 all-time meetings and the first since 2008 when it beat Rowan 13-9 at home on April 19.
Montclair State fell behind 1-0 in the first minute of the game before scoring the next four goals, the final two by Schoneveld giving MSU a 4-1 lead with 15:34 left in the first half. After Rowan ended the spurt, Schoneveld, who has 23 goals in her last four contests, recorded her third goal and a four-goal run by MSU inside the 11-minute mark boosted the Montclair State to 9-3 with 3:19 left in the first half.
The Red Hawks led 9-4 at the break but a goal by Rowan's Kelly O'Brien trimmed the lead to 9-5.
Jenna Bussiere (Dayton, NJ, South Brunswick) and Conlon scored 67 seconds apart as the lead was pushed back to 11-5 with 25:38 remaining. Rowan made a run with four goals over six-minute span, the last two coming 19 seconds apart which brought the Profs within 11-9 with 15:32 left.
Conlon gave MSU some breathing room scoring with 11:17 remaining for a three-goal lead. Rowan added another goal less than two minutes later to make the score 12-10 but that would be the last goal by the Profs for over five minutes. Meanwhile, Bussiere and Schoneveld scored widening the Montclair State lead to 14-10 with 5:11 to go.
After Rowan scored its final goal, keeper
Alexandra Tepper (Flanders, NJ, Mount Olive) came up with a pair of saves as Montclair came away with the victory.
Tepper made 12 saves for Montclair State, which got six draws from Bussiere and four by
Kasey Maguire (Marlton, NJ, Cherokee). Defender
Meredith King (Caldwell, NJ, James Caldwell) had another outstanding day causing four turnovers.
Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday with a 4:00 pm NJAC contest at Ramapo College.
