No. 12 Men's Lacrosse Tops Kean 10-8 to Claim Skyline Regular-Season Title

Mangan Scores Four as Red Hawks Earn Top Seed in Conference Tournament

Union, NJ – Sophomore Brett Mangan (Maplewood, NJ, Columbia) scored four times, including the first three in the opening period as No. 12 Montclair State began the game with a five-goal run capturing the Skyline Conference regular-season title for the third consecutive season with a 10-8 victory over Kean on Wednesday evening.

Junior midfielder Michael Schreck (Flemington, NJ, Hunterdon Central) had three goals and two assists for the five-time defending champion Red Hawks (14-1), who have won eight straight games.

Montclair will be the No. 1 seed in the Skyline Tournament and host Richard Stockton in the semifinals at Sprague Field on Wednesday, April 30 at 4:00 pm. The championship game is scheduled for Saturday, May 3 with the winner earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship.

Mangan put MSU in front 2:24 into the game as finishing off a feed from Schreck. He would score again on a man-up goal six minutes later and added his third 46 seconds after that giving the Red Hawks a 3-0 lead with 6:13 to play. Shane Raymond (Old Bridge, NJ, Old Bridge) scored with over four minutes left and Schreck's first with 3:26 to go gave Montclair a 5-0 lead after one period.

The lead nearly evaporated in the second as the Cougars (14-2, 4-1 Skyline) almost turned the tables on MSU in the second with four goals, three by Richard Cheifitz whose  goal with 2:36 to go brought Kean within 5-4. Schreck stopped the run scoring with 47 ticks however Anthony Perrotta's goal with 24 secondd to play made the score 6-5 in favor of MSU at the half.

The second half saw the teams trade goals as each time Kean pulled within one the Red Hawks answered. Raymond scored with 2:40 left in the third but Cheifitz matched it with 28 seconds remaining as MSU led 7-6 after three.

Schreck made it an 8-6 game 1:31 into the fourth however Zach Williams countered for the Cougars with 9:44 left as the differential was a goal for the fourth time in he game. Mangan scored 21 seconds later to boost the lead back to 9-7 and the teams played scoreless for the next seven minutes until Cheifitz closed the gap to 9-8 with 2:08 left.

The Red Hawks won the ensuing face off but a turnover gave Kean the ball back with a chance to tie. Anthony Perrotta fired a shot with 1:27 to go however Michael Dorn (Blairstown, NJ, North Warren) came up with his 10th save of the game keeping MSU in front. Montclair turned that save into an insurance goal with Sam Morrissey (Hackettstown, NJ, West Morris Central) setting up Don Finn (Wall, NJ, Christian Brothers Academy) for the score as MSU led 10-8.

Dorn, who also added five ground balls in the game, would come up with one more save stopping Cheifitz with 1:04 to go and the Red Hawks ran out the clock from there.  

Len Bellezza (Plainsboro, NJ, West Windsor-Plainsboro South) led the Montclair defense with five caused turnovers along with for ground balls while Ryan Young (Jackson, NJ, Jackson Memorial) added two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Schreck collected three ground balls.
