Beverly, MA – Freshman
Kyle Goodwin (South Brunswick, NJ, South Brunswick) scored a pair of goals as ninth-ranked Montclair State captured the Gull Invitational at Endicott College with a 4-0 victory over Husson on Saturday afternoon.
Montclair (2-0) and Husson (1-1) entered the championship game this afternoon after defeating their opponents, Skidmore and Endicott, respectively on Friday evening. Goodwin was named to the All-Tournament Team along with seniors
Maxx Wurzburger (Glen Rock, NJ, Glen Rock) and
Jon Krzysik (Clifton, NJ, Paramus Catholic).
The first half was controlled by Montclair as they outshot the Eagles 30-1. Twenty minutes into the match Goodwin got the first tally on the board after receiving a feed from junior
Tyler Daly (Neptune, NJ, Neptune). Four minutes later the Red Hawks were back at it as juniors
Damian Bziukiewicz (East Rutherford, NJ, Becton Regional) and
Lucas Terci (Union, NJ, Union) made a nice combo play as Terci originally blasted a shot out front that deflected off the goalkeeper and Bziukiewicz was able to pick off the rebound and find the back of the net.
With the 30 Montclair shots game a very busy Husson defense led by senior goalkeeper Brian Potter (Waterville, Maine) who made an impressive 11 stops in the half.
Entering the second half with a 2-0 advantage Montclair outshot Husson 17-5 while the Eagles held the Red Hawks to just five corners.
Twenty minutes into the second half Goodwin was at it again after he marched through the final third and ripped the ball into the back of the net that was just too crisp for Potter to grasp. Just over a minute later Terci posted his first goal of the game after receiving a pass from Daly and slipped the ball past Potter.
The Eagles worked in the midfield to create opportunities led by junior striker Stephen Berenyi (Levant, Maine) who led Husson with six shots in the 90 minutes of play.
Goalkeepers
Michael Gonzalez (Kenilworth, NJ, Union Catholic) and
Kevin Lynch (Cinnaminson, NJ, Cinnaminson) combined on the shutout for the Red Hawks.
Montclair remains on the road this coming Wednesday, September 3 as it travels to Hunter College.
