Montclair, NJ – Freshmen forward
Kyle Goodwin (South Brunswick, NJ, South Brunswick) and
James Buonavita (Oakland, NJ, Ramapo) each scored two goals as Montclair State got back on the winning track with a 6-0 victory over City College of New York at MSU Soccer Park on Monday evening.
Freshman midfielder
Jake Seaman (Montclair, NJ, Montclair) and senior
Jesse Shea (Marlton, NJ, Cherokee) also added goals as the Red Hawks (4-2) snapped a two-game losing streak with its fifth straight victory over CCNY taking a 16-1 lead in the all-time series.
Montclair outshot the Beavers (1-5) 30-1 in the contest and scored on its very first attempt as Goodwin served a corner kick into the middle of the six yard line where Seaman was able to knock it in for his first career goal and a 1-0 Red Hawk lead at the 2:09 mark.
Despite outshooting CCNY 14-1 through the first 45 minutes, Seaman's goal would be the only score as goalkeeper Maxwell Berkow (New York, NY / Stuyvesant) made four saves to keep the margin at a goal.
The Red Hawks would keep the pressure on CCNY into the second half breaking through in the 67th minute when Goodwin registered the first of his two goals. The freshman collected a ball on the right side and drove in along the end line before unleashing a shot from a flat angle that caromed inside the far post making the score 2-0.
Less than three minutes later, Goodwin was at it again notching his seventh goal of the year off an assist from junior
Damian Bziukiewicz (East Rutherford, NJ, Becton Regional) at 69:20. Buonavita got the next two goals ripping a shot from 19 yards out past Berkow in the 76th minute and banging in a free kick from 25 yards out for a 5-0 lead with 7:47 left.
Shea rounded out the scoring with his third goal of the season, finishing off a feed from Alain Brown at 86:12.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Michael Gonzalez (Kenilworth, NJ, Union Catholic) got the shutout, his first of the season, despite not having to make a save. Berkow stopped six shots for CCNY.
The Red Hawks are back in action on Saturday, September 20 when it hosts defending NCAA Division III national champion Messiah College to MSU Soccer Park for a 6:00 pm mathcup.
