Volleyball Battles Back to Top St. Joseph's in Five, Sweeps Past CCNY

Courtney Matlock Leads Red Hawks as MSU Moves to 11-3

Patchogue, NY – The Montclair State volleyball team rallied from two sets down against host St. Joseph's College for a thrilling five-set victory as the Red Hawks swept their two matches on Saturday. Montclair earlier posted a 3-0 win against CCNY.

The two victories boosted Montclair's record to 11-3, which includes wins in seven of its last eight contests. MSU knocked off CCNY 25-16, 25-23 and 25-14).

Sophomore Courtney Matlock (Jackson, NJ, Jackson Memorial) recorded 10 kills along with three service aces as Montclair posted a hitting efficiency of .442 in the win over the Beavers including .562 and .474 in the first two sets, respectively. Courtney LePore (Deer Park, NY, Deer Park) and Allyssa Angel (Flemington, NJ, Hunterdon Central) had five kills apiece with Melissa Terpstra (Midland Park, NJ, Midland Park) and Rebecca Matasker (Washington Township, NJ, Westwood) each getting four.

Sophomore Kimberly Matlock (Jackson, NJ, Jackson Memorial) had 26 assists and four digs with libero Lily Scanzillo (Upper Saddle River, NJ, Northern Highlands) leading the team with six digs.

Courtney Matlock once again led MSU with 12 kills with freshman Hayley Merrill (West Windsor, NJ, West Windsor-Plainsboro South) added 11 yet the Red Hawks found themselves down 2-0 after dropping the first two sets, 25-12 and 25-18. In the third set, Montclair led 23-20 before the Eagles tied the match with three consecutive points. An attack error by SJC put MSU in front and the Red Hawks got back into the match as a kill from Leah Stine (Bridgewater, NJ, Bridgewater-Raritan) gave Montclair State the 25-23 win.

The momentum of capturing that set spilled over into the fourth where the Red Hawks scored 11 of the final 15 points in the set capped off by freshman Madison Maute's (Sparta, NJ, Sparta) kill in a 25-18 triumph that forced the deciding set.

In the fifth set, Montclair trailed 14-12 before scoring the final four points to take the match with a 16-14 victory. Angela Campo (Washington Township, NJ, Westwood) set up Courtney Matlock to bring the Red Hawks within one and an attack error by SJC tied the set at 14-14. Campo delivered a service ace for the go-ahead point before another attack error by the Eagles gave Montclair State the set and the match.

Maute finished with seven kills while Matasker and Stine each had six. Campo picked up 39 assists along with four aces and six digs while Scanzillo had a team-best 12 digs. Terpstra chipped in with eight digs and Samantha Szura (Hewitt, NJ, Ramapo) recorded six.

Montclair State returns home for its first NJAC home match on Tuesday, September 23. The Red Hawks host Rowan with first serve of the league contest set for 7:00 pm.
