Field Hockey Bounces Back, Rolls Past Drew in Second Half Explosion, 7-1

Struss Collects Two, Butrico Sisters Each Score

Madison, NJ – Freshman forward Kaitlyn Struss (Fairfield, NJ, West Essex) posted her second multiple-goal game of the season scoring twice as No. 3 Montclair State bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 7-1 win at Drew University on Saturday.

The Red Hawks got goals from six different players as it scored six times in the second half to improve to 3-1.

Montclair outshot the Rangers 12-3 in the first half however it was only able to find the back of the cage one with that coming at the 12:47 mark on a goal from sophomore Danielle Butrico (South Plainfield, NJ, South Plainfield).

But MSU exploded in the second half with its six goals the first coming from Struss, who now has five goals in her first four contests. Sophomore Maura Johnston (Montville, NJ, Montville) made a cross to Struss who went one-on-one with the goal keep before depositing a shot into the right side for a 2-0 lead.

Senior Joelle Butrico (South Plainfield, NJ, South Plainfield) made it a three-goal lead 59 seconds later on a penalty stroke. It was her second straight contest with a penalty stroke goal and the third of the year for the defender who had not tallied a goal prior to this season.

Struss collected her second of the game at 46:11 beating the keep on another one-on-one situation and a goal by Gianna Moglino (Holmdel, NJ, Holmdel) inside the left corner of the goal 89 seconds later pushed the lead to 5-0. Senior Abby Erler recorded her second goal of the year off a penalty corner before the Rangers finally broke through with 16:39 left.

Arielle Galgano (Cedar Run, NJ, Southern Regional) capped off the scoring for the Red Hawks knocking in a loose ball in front of the goal with 6:29 to play.

Senior goalkeeper Rebecca Brattole (Clark, NJ, Arthur L. Johnson) made two saves for MSU, which finished with a 25-4 advantage in shots.

Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, September 10 when it hosts New Paltz at Sprague Field beginning at 7:00 pm.
