Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State volleyball won two of its three matches on Saturday as the Red Hawks opened their home schedule at the Panzer Athletic Center. Montclair swept past John Jay and Cedar Crest before suffering a tough five-set loss to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
It was a balanced attack for MSU, now 4-2, in the win over John Jay as the Red Hawks rolled past the Bloodhounds, 1-4 by scores of 25-15, 25-16 and 25-11.
Leah Stine (Bridgewater, NJ, Bridgewater-Raritan) led the way with six kills while sophomore
Courtney Matlock (Jackson, NJ, Jackson Memorial) added five and
Hayley Merrill (West Windsor, NJ, West Windsor-Plainsboro South) four. Thirteen different Red Hawks recorded at lead one kill.
Erika Gerner (Sparta, NJ, Sparta) and
Courtney LePore (Deer Park, NY, Deer Park) chipped in with three apiece.
Kimberly Matlock (Jackson, NJ, Jackson Memorial) had 10 assists while
Alyssa Plum (Williamstown, NJ, Williamstown) and
Angela Campo (Washington Township, NJ, Westwood) delivered eight apiece. Campo and
Samantha Szura (Hewitt, NJ, Ramapo) served up three aces each while Gerner topped all players with 11 digs. Szura had nine digs.
The balance in attack continued for Montclair State in its win over Cedar Crest (0-2) as MSU topped the Falcons 25-7, 25-12 and 25-19.
Melissa Terpstra (Midland Park, NJ, Midland Park) and
Madison Maute (Sparta, NJ, Sparta) had five kills each with Merrill, Gerner and
Kylie Freer (Wayne, NJ, Mount St. Dominic) getting four apiece. Kimberly Matlock had 12 assists and the Red Hawks got seven digs apiece from Terpstra and Szura.
Against the Merchant Marine Academy, Montclair captured the first set 25-14 and after falling 27-25 in the second, took a 2-1 lead with a 25-19 win in Set 3. However the undefeated Mariners (5-0) evened the match at 25-18 before taking the decisive set 15-10.
Courtney Matlock and Terpstra, who also collected eight service aces and nine digs, had 11 and 10 kills, respectively with Maute registering eight.
Allyssa Angel (Flemington, NJ, Hunterdon Central) and Merril chipped in with five each. Campo notched 25 assists along with six digs while Kimberly Matlock added 11 assists. Maure served up three aces and had five blocks with Szura and
Jenifer Ramirez (Bogota, NJ, Bogota) leading the way for Montclair in digs with 19 and 13 respectively.
The Red Hawks return to action on Tuesday, September 9 when it hosts Baruch College at 6:00 pm.
