SHAUN RUSSELL scored 20 points however it would not be enough as Montclair State dropped its second straight falling to Rowan University 66-53 on Wednesday evening.
Sophomore guard
ERICK LOFTEN-HARRIS added 12 points and three assists for MSU, which fell to 4-7 on the season, 1-5 in the NJAC. The Profs improve to 11-1 overall and they are 5-1 in the conference.
Forward Ike Robinson (Trenton, NJ/Conwell-Egan Catholic (PA)) recorded a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds to lead Rowan. Forward Daniel Waynick (East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown) tallied 14 points and eight boards. Guard Kris O'Connor (Mount Laurel, NJ/Paul VI) chipped in with nine points while guard Josh Borrelli (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) and forward Chris Gross (Cranford, NJ/Roselle Catholic) contributed with eight points apiece.
Guard
LAVRONE GREEN (fr. Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) had seven for Montclair State.
The score was tied three times in the first half with the last coming at 12:07 (14-14). The Red Hawks used a 13-4 run to lead 27-18 with 3:39 remaining. Loften-Harris nailed a pair of threes, Russell scored five points and forward
KEVIN MCGORRY (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) had a layup. Rowan closed the period with a 7-1 surge for a 28-25 halftime deficit. Four different players scored in the spurt.
Guard
JEROME HILTON (Jersey City, NJ/Snyder) began the second stanza with a layup and foul shot for a 31-25 Montclair State advantage (19:35). The Profs tallied 14 of the next 16 points to lead by six (39-33) with 13:53 on the clock. Robinson and Waynick registered seven points apiece. A three-pointer by Borrelli made the score 44-37 (11:47). Green's free throw got the Red Hawks within six (49-43) at the eight-minute mark. Russell's layup made it an eight-point game (55-47) with 5:01 left. Rowan recorded 11 of the final 17 points to end the contest. Waynick had 12 points in the second half and Robinson followed with 11.
Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, January 10 when it hosts Rutgers-Camden in an NJAC matchup at the Panzer Athletic Center beginning at 1:00 pm.
