NIKKI SENOPOULOS posted 13 kills and senior
COURTNEY LEPORE added 12 as Montclair State extended its winning streak to three with a four-set win over Rutgers-Newark at the Golden Dome on Tuesday evening.
Freshman
NATALIA MAJKUT, the NJAC Rookie of the Week, added eight kills as the Red Hawks downed the Scarlet Raiders, 25-21, 25-17, 24-26 and 25-13. MSU upped its record to 12-7 overall, 3-2 in the NJAC following the win.
Senopoulos had five kills in the opening set, including the go-ahead kill giving MSU a 16-15 lead and sparking a four-point run. The Scarlet Raiders (10-9, 1-4 NJAC) cut the lead back to 19-7 however LePore had a kill and Senopoulos served up an ace restoring the lead to five points. Rutgers-Newark pulled within 22-21 however a service error by Rutgers-Newark and consecutive kills by
COURTNEY MATLOCK gave Montclair a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, a five-point run by the Scarlet Raiders put the hosts up 14-12 however Montclair State countered with a 7-0 spurt to take control. Senopoulos ignited the run with an ace and added two kills with LePore finishing off the run with consecutive kills.
MELISSA TERPSTRA had two kills in the run as MSU led 19-14.
MADISON MAUTE closed out the set with one of her seven kills as MSU went up 2-0 with the 25-17 victory.
Senopoulos and LePore recorded back-to-back kills in the third set bringing Montclair State to match point however the Scarlet Raiders reeled off the next three points to get back into the match with a 26-24 victory.
But Montclair quickly rebounded with the first seven points of the fourth set. LePore got the first point with a kill and Matlock added two kills along with a block as the lead grew to 13-2. Senopoulos posted two of the final three points as MSU closed out the match.
Maute had seven kills with
REBECCA MATASKER adding six. Matlock and Terpstra had five kills apiece while
KIMBERLY MATLOCK amassed 53 assists along with 10 digs. Senopoulos, who had five aces, made it a double-double with 18 digs with libero
LILY SCANZILLO recording a match-high 25 digs. Freshman
ASHLEY GRIFFITH posted 11 digs for the Red Hawks, who had six blocks in the game.
Montclair State goes right back into conference play on Thursday, October 15 as the Red Hawks host Kean University at the Panzer Athletic Center beginning at 7:00 pm.
