SHAWNA GRABOWSKI and
MARTINA LANDEKA each scored in the first half as Montclair State knocked off Kean University, 2-1 at Alumni Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The Red Hawks (10-2-2, 3-1-2) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first half. Within the first 13 minutes of play, Grabowski scored from twenty yards out, over the goalkeeper into the upper right corner of the goal, assisted by
KENDEL BERNARDINI. Grabowski ssisted the next goal, headed in by Landeka in the 25
th minute.
The Cougars did not close out the first half without a fight. Kean tried to keep the Red Hawks at bay, putting a team save in the book on the night from a shot off a corner. With seven minutes left in the half, KC Nunez made back-to-back saves off the Montclair attack.
A Red Hawks foul in the box with 13 minutes left in the match gave Deanna Columbia a penalty kick opportunity which she successfully translated into a goal to erase the shutout for the Cougars.
Despite outshooting MSU in the second half, the Red Hawks played out the clock by stalling in the corner to edge Kean for the win.
Nunez accumulated eight saves while ERINNE FINLAYSON made two stops. The final shot count of the night was led by MSU, 16-7, including a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Montclair State is back in action on Saturday, October 17 at home against Rutgers-Camden beginning at 6:00 pm
