Montclair, NJ - Sophomore forward Katilyn Struss accounted for all three goals with her second hat trick of the season as ninth-ranked Montclair State knocked off local and NJAC rival William Paterson, 3-1 at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.
ARIELLE GALGANO and Meghan Roeloffs each had an assist as the Red Hawks (13-3, 3-1 NJAC) captured their second straight victory while beating its nearby rival for the sixth straight time. MSU leads the all-time series 47-24-4.
Angelica Giammetta scored the lone goal for William Paterson (10-4, 3-1 NJAC), which had its seven-game winning streak snapped with the loss.
The Red Hawks outshot William Paterson 10-5 in the first half and had nine penalty corners yet still found themselves in a 1-1 tie thanks in large part to WPU keeper Meg Davies who made five saves in the first half.
Struss put MSU on the board two seconds shy of the 10-minute mark of the opening half banging in a rebound off a shot by
CHARISSE MYERS. The Pioneers would tie the game a little over 11 minutes later on Giammetta's ninth goal of the year. Giammetta flipped a shot from the left doorstep that Myers made a defensive save one. The ball came right back to Giammetta who jammed in the rebound knotting the score at 1-1.
Struss untied the game at the 49:59 mark of the second half with her second goal. After a Myers shot was blocked, the ball bounced out to Galgano who tapped a pass in front to Struss who whirled and fired a shot inside the right post giving Montclair State the 2-1 lead. Struss recorded the hat trick and an insurance goal for MSU with 11:53 remaining gathering a pass from Roeloffs just inside the circle and ripping a shot past Davies for her team-leading 14th goal of the year.
Davies finished with 14 saves for the Pioneers while Brattole stopped seven for Montclair, which outshots William Paterson 28-11 for the game in addition to holding a decisive 20-9 advantage in penalty corners.
Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, October 24 with a road NJAC contest at Rowan University beginning at 1:00 pm.
