Kean's Late Touchdown Sinks Football in Season Finale, 28-21

Red Hawks Close Out 2015 Campaign

Montclair, NJ - Quarterback Charles App scored from two yards out with eight seconds remaining lifting Kean University to a 28-21 victory over Montclair State in the Red Hawks' season finale at Sprague Field on Saturday.

App's touchdown completed a 14-play, 77-yard drive that lasted 4:11 helping the Cougars (7-3, 6-3) close out their regular season with their third consecutive victory. App was the hero last week scoring on a 14-yard run in overtime as Kean upended Rowan 20-17. The victory helped the Cougars snap a three-game losing streak against MSU as Kean picked up just its eighth win versus Montclair State in 41 all-time meetings.

Senior running back DENZEL NIEVES rushed for 118 yards and linebacker JOSHUA BETTS totaled 11 solo tackles for Montclair State, which closed out its season at 4-6 overall for the second time in three years. MSU finished its league slate at 4-5.

App engineered a drive that nearly wasn't as a Montclair punt glanced off the helmet of Damian Corredor with the Red Hawks recovering the ball at the Cougar 5 with 4:19 to play. However, the Red Hawks were flagged for interference on the fair catch allowing Kean to take possession at its own 23 yard line following the penalty. Corredor burst for 20 yards on a 3rd-and-5 out to the Kean 48 and added a six-yard run on another third down as Kean advanced to the MSU 41. The Cougars face a 3rd-and-9 from the MSU 40 when App found Tahj Hammary for 17 yards to the Montclair 23. A Corredor 14-yard run moved the ball to the 3 with 55 seconds left. Corredor would be stopped on two tires and with the clock ticking down, App maneuvered his way in from the left side giving Kean a 26-20 lead. He then hit Matt Liparini for the two-point conversion giving the Cougars a one-touchdown advantage.

Montclair State got one last chance however LeRon Dillard sealed the game with his second interception on the final play.

The Red Hawks got the opening kickoff and put points on the board on its fourth play from scrimmage as Nieves went around the right side and raced 54 yards for the game's first score. It as the longest run of the year for Nieves as Montclair led 7-0 with 13:30 left in the opening quarter. Kean then tied the game using its special teams. Liparini blocked a punt at the MSU and the ball rolled into the end zone where he recovered it for the touchdowin knotting the game at 7-7 with 9:14 to go in the first.

MSU would force a pair of turnovers as JOSH BROWN recovered a fumble near midfield and RAHMEIN HERRON picked off an App pass returning it to the Kean 10. But a 27-yard field goal attempt by RYAN DELEON went wide as the game was tied at one period.

Both teams would score in the second wth each adided by penalties as the two combined for 25 yellow hankies totaling 264 yards. Kean had 13 for 139 yards while Montclair was flagged 12 times for 125.

The first of those penalties came on MSU's first drive in the second quarter. MSU moved the ball to the Kean, however RYAN DAVIES was sacked on third down back the Cougar 30. But Kean was flagged for sideline interference allowing the drive to continue at the 15. Davies hit JULANEE PRINCE down to the 3 with JOHN DISTEFANO rushing in for th score with 11:02 left as Montclair took a 14-7 lead.

Two possessions later, Kean tied the game on an 11-yard Corredor run with 4:39 left before halftime. Corredor kept the drive going a 13-yard run on a 3rd-and-11 and the ball made its way down to the MSU 15 where Kean faced another third down. App rolled out toward the sideline and was headed for a six-yard sack when the Red Hawks were called for a late hit on the quarterback which put the ball at the 11. After an incompletion, Corredor fiinished off the drive with the touchdown tying the contest again at 14-14.

The Cougars took the lead with 3:39 in the third as Aryeh Moslavi connected from 20 yards out but Montclair State grabbed it right back in the start of the fourth with DiStefano getting his second TD on a 14-yard run with 13:48 left. Kean trimmed the lead to a point as Moslavi hit again from 31 yards with 7:54 to go. That field goal came after a punt by Kean was ruled to have hit off the helmet of an MSU player giving the visitors the ball at the Montclair 25.
