Montclair, NJ – Senior forward
MELISSA TOBIE (Elizabeth, NJ /Roselle Catholic) recorded another double-double leading four players in double figures as No. 9/11 Montclair State easily moved past William Paterson, 86-61 at the Panzer Athletic Center on Wednesday evening.
Tobie registered her seventh straight double-double finishing with 17 points and 11 rebounds in addition to three assists, two blocks and two steals helping the Red Hawks to their sixth straight win. MSU (20-1, 13-1 NJAC) won its 20
th game of the year, the third consecutive season that MSU has topped that mark. It's the first time that Montclair has collected three straight 20-win seasons since a similar run from 1988-1991.
Junior forward Mary Haines (Ridgefield Park, NJ / Ridgefield Park) had a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Pioneers (11-9, 7-6 NJAC), who dropped their second straight contest.
William Paterson's Ashley Marfo (Bergenfield, NJ / Bergenfield) gave the Pioneers a 5-4 lead with 17:33 to go in the first half. However that would be the last points WPU would score over the eight-plus as Montclair State went on a 26-point run.
SAGE BENNETT (Sicklerville, NJ / Winslow) drained a three to start the run and a three by Tobie was followed by a layup from
KATE TOBIE (Elizabeth, NJ / Roselle Catholic) and three-point play by
TAYLOR HARMON (Saddle Brook, NJ / Saddle Brook) making the score 15-5 with 15:26 left.
Senior guard
JANITZA AQUINO (Kearny, NJ /Kearny) scored the next four points and three free throws off a three-point attempt/foul against
RACHAEL KRAUSS (Farmingdale, NJ / Colts Neck) boosted the MSU lead to 26-5 with 10:36 to go. Freshman
KATIE SIRE (Hazlet, NJ / Raritan) connected twice from the line before
KATE TOBIE's fast-break layup put the Red Hawks in front 30-7.
MELISSA TOBIE had 10 points in the first half while
KATE TOBIE and Harmon finished with eight and seven points, respectively. Montclair State had 10 different players get into the scoring column in the first half and forced the Pioneers into 14 turnovers that were turned into 21 points.
Harmon finished with 13 point and eight rebounds with
KATE TOBIE also netting 13 along with three rebounds. Sire chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds as Montclair outrebounded William Paterson 50-31, including 21-11 on the offensive glass.
ZOE CURTIS (Little Silver, NJ / Red Bank Regional) added eight points off the bench.
Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, February 7 heading to Camden, NJ to face Rutgers-Camden at 1:00 pm.
