DEVYN RANSOM (Jersey City, NJ / Marist) scored on a layup at the buzzer lifting Montclair State to its second straight victory as the Red Hawks edged Yeshiva University 85-83 on Monday evening.
Freshman guard
LAVRONE GREEN (Teaneck, NJ / Teaneck), the NJAC Rookie of the Week, scored 24 points as the Red Hawks (7-14) squandered a 17-point halftime lead before bouncing back for the victory marking the first time MSU has won consecutive games since opening the season with two wins at the Shenendoah Tip-Off Tournament.
The Red Hawks torched the nets in the opening period shooting 62.1 percent from the floor, including 5-of-8 from three-point range to build a 47-30 lead at the break. Green scored on a layup with 15:52 to go for a 10-8 MSU lead and Montclair widened its advantage to 23-13 with 8:48 left as
KEVIN MCGORRY (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford) connected on a jumper.
Montclair led 33-23 with 4:44 remaining before scoring 14 of the final 21 points in the half.
TRAMAINE WHITE hit a pair of three-pointers with McGorry putting in a layup just before the horn for the 17-point halftime lead.
That all changed in the second half as the Maccabees slowly chipped away at the lead getting within 76-67 with 5:53 left on a layup from Benjamin Oirech who later made two free throws with 2:23 left for a 78-74 Montclair State advantage. A three-pointer by Benjy Ritholtz made it a one-point game with just over two minutes to go and Shaje Weiss connected twice from the line putting Yeshiva in front 79-78 with 1:42 showing on the clock.
Ransom put MSU back on top 22 seconds later with a pair of foul shots and his layup with 33 ticks gave the Red Hawks an 83-81 lead. MSU missed a chance to extend it lead misfiring at the line. Ritholtz grabbed the rebound and after a timeout, he hit a jumper with :06 left knotting the score at 78-78.
The Red Hawks came right back down the floor and
ERICK LOFTEN-HARRIS (Union, NJ / Union) found Ransom for the game-winner.
Loften-Harris finished with five points, eight rebounds, nine assists and four steals for MSU which got nine points apiece from Ransom and
JEROME HILTON (Jersey City, NJ / Snyder).
JARRETT BOGUS (Middlesex, NJ / Middlesex) scored 10 points for the Red Hawks. White, McGorry and
SHAUN RUSSELL (Brooklyn, NY / Willingboro) chipped in with six points each.
Montclair State will look to extended its winning streak on Wednesday, February 11 when it hosts Rowan University at the Panzer Athletic Center at 8:00 pm. MSU will be looking to even the season series after the Profs posted a 66-53 win in Glassboro on January 7.
