Fort Myers, FL – The Montclair State softball team was swept in its two contests at the Gene Cusic Classic on Tuesday. The Red Hawks (2-2) fell to Wisconsin Lutheran 16-3 before suffering a 7-4 setback against Emmanuel College.
Against Wisconsin Lutheran, Montclair got out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
LAUREN GUILLEN led off the game with a double and scored as
BROOKE POWERS delivered an RBI single to centerfield for the game's first run. After an out was recorded,
MELISSA RUSTEMEYER singled home Powers giving MSU the early two-run advantage.
But the Warriors erased that quickly in the bottom of the inning exploding for eight runs on nine hits. They would put up seven runs in the second inning as the lead grew to 15-2 and closed out their scoring in the fourth with one run.
Montclair State would get its final tally in the top of the fourth inning when
BRIANNA DAVIDSON brought home
NOEL HODGINS with an RBI single.
Powers (1-1) took the loss for MSU. Guillen and Rustemeyer had two hits apiece for the Red Hawks, who had 10 total hits in the contest.
In the second game, Emmanuel struck for a run in the top of the first inning and exploded for five more in the third inning for a 6-0 lead. The Red Hawks would get on the board in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Powers and crept within 6-4 in the sixth. Davidson led off the inning with a home run and RBIs by Rustemeyer and
ALANA LUNA got MSU within striking distance.
Emmanuel tacked on a run in the top of the seventh which proved to be big as MSU threatened in their last at bat. Powers brought home a run with a single and the Red Hawks loaded the bases with two outs. However a force play at second ended the game.
Powers finished 2-for-4 at the plate for Montclair State.
Montclair returns to action on Wednesday with two more contests. MSU faces Ohio Wesleyan University at 1:00 pm before taking on in-state rival Drew University at 3:00 pm.
