Softball Swept by Staten Island in Pair of One-Run Losses

Red Hawks Fall 4-3 in Opener, Lose 10-9 in Extra Innings in Nightcap

Staten Island, NY – It was a pair of one-run contests for Montclair State however the Red Hawks came up on the wrong side of the scoreboard in both games as MSU dropped a doubleheader with College of Staten Island on Thursday.

Montclair (5-9) fell 4-3 in the opener and then lost a heart-breaking, nine-inning 10-9 contest in the nightcap.

The second game was a wild back-and-forth contest that saw the Red Hawks bounce back from an early 4-0 deficit and take two leads in the game before the Dolphins (9-3) eventually pulled the game out.

Trailing 4-0 after four innings, MSU scored three times in the fifth. BROOKE POWERS put MSU on the board with an RBI double that scored LAUREN GUILLEN and MELANY ZELLER followed with another that closed the gap to 4-2. RACHEL LYNCH made it three consecutive two-base hit, brining home Zeller as MSU pulled within a run.

Montclair tied the game the in the seventh on a Powers's sacrifice fly and led 6-4 after Zeller and MELISSA RUSTEMEYER each drove in runs.  But the Dolphins answered with two runs in its half sending the contest into extra innings.

Again the Red Hawks would go back on top with three runs in the top of the eighth. BRIANNA DAVIDSON singled home two runs and Powers followed with an RBI double for a 9-6 advantage. However, CSI struck again with three runs in the bottom of the frame.

After Montclair failed to score in the top of the ninth, Staten Island's Kristy Colangelo lofted a sacrifice fly for the game-winning run.

Powers finished 3-for-4 in the game while Rustemeyer was 3-for-5 at the plate. Guillen had two hits for MSU, which collected 14 in the game. Powers (3-7) took the loss in relief as she went 4 1/3 innings.

In the opener, Staten Island jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings using the long ball. Jacqueline Cautela opened the bottom of the first with a solo homer and Colangelo belted a three-run shot in the second.

Montclair State would chip away at the lead with two runs in the third on an RBI double by Davidson and fielder's choice grounder by Powers trimming the deficit to 4-2. In the seventh, Montclair threatened as Zeller doubled home Powers making it 4-3 however Cautela got a ground out to end the game.

Powers struck out three and walked three as she suffered the loss. Cautela (5-2) fanned two and walk two while allowing six hits in the complete-game effort. Zeller and Guillen had two hits apiece for MSU.

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, April 4 traveling to Stockton University for and NJAC twinbill with the Ospreys, beginning at 1:00 pm.
