William Paterson got on the board three batters into the contest. Principe tripled with one out which was followed by a Keanna Ross RBI single for the 1-0 lead. That would be it for the scoring a Podmajersky and MSU starter
BROOKE POWERS traded zeroes over the next three innings until the fifth and Lachelle Rouse launched a solo home run to lead off the inning.
Montclair was held hitless until the fourth when
NOEL HODGINS flared a ball into center field. Despite being held in check offensively, the Red Hawks threatened in the sixth.
LAUREN GUILLEN reached on an error and Hodgins walked. William Paterson then elected to intentionally walk Powers loading the bases.
MELANY ZELLER then hit a sharp ground ball back through the middle that was snared by Podmajersky who threw to first base to end the threat.
William Paterson tacked on two runs in the seventh. Rouse delivered an RBI double and pinch-hitter Kerrin Dys added an RBI single for the 4-0 advantage.
Rouse finished 2-for-3 at the plate for the Pioneers. Powers (3-9) took the loss as she allowed four runs and six hits, striking out one and walking two.
The nightcap featured much more offense as the teams combined for 16 runs and 29 hits.
Montclair trailed 4-2, but got within a run in the fifth inning as Powers led off with a double and scored on a
BRIANNA DAVIDSON RBI single. MSU then took the lead in the sixth.
SOPHIA IVEZAJ opened the inning with a triple and crossed the plate on a base hit by Hodgins. Two batters later, Zeller grounded out bringing home Guillen for 5-4 Red Hawks lead.
But Montclair let the lead slip away in the seventh. William Paterson loaded the bases with one out when Kaitlyn Poretti grounded back to the circle. Kim Fryer, led off with a walk, beat the throw home tying the game at 5-5.
After a scoreless seventh, the Pioneers exploded in the tiebreaker with five runs on four hits. Nicole Fryer laid down a perfect bunt for a base hit moving Gabrielle Castelli to third base. Fryer stole second and both runners scored when Principe doubled up the left-center gap for a 7-5 WPU lead. Ross made it three straight hits before a double by Wasilak added to the lead. Wasilak scored on a wild pitch to complete the scoring rally for the Pioneers.
The Red Hawks would get a run back in its half of the eight on an RBI double by Guillen but Castelli, who ended the MSU scoring chance in the sixth, closed out the game.
Castelli (6-3) got the win as she went the final three innings allowing two hits with a walk and strikeout.
