Montclair, NJ – For the second straight day the Montclair State volleyball team split their matches in the North Jersey Challenge at the Panzer Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon. The Red Hawks (5-3) fell to Gettysburg College before rebounding with a victory against St. Joseph's (LI).
Back on the court after a five-set loss on late Friday evening to Gordon College, Montclair took the first two sets against Gettysburg only to see the Bullets win the next three in a 3-2 victory. MSU won 25-12 and 25-20 before Gettysburg took the final three sets 25-23, 25-29 and 15-10 in the decisive set.
Junior
COURTNEY MATLOCK posted an identical double-double with 19 kills and 19 digs while senior
NIKKI SENOPOULOS added 11 kills along with a 21 digs. Sophomore
MADISON MAUTE chipped in with nine kills and three blocks with libero
DANIELLE OLCESE leading the Red Hawks with 30 digs.
KIMBERLY MATLOCK totaled 29 assists with freshman
ASHLEY GRIFFITH coming off the bench to register 17 assists along with 14 digs.
MSU hit a solid .333 in the two sets (28 kills, 5 errors) but the Red Hawks cooled off and hit .098 in the final three frames (28 Kills, 17 errors in 112 attempts).
Montclair State would bounce back in a big way beating the Golden Eagles (3-4) to salvage the split on the day. Matlock paced MSU with 13 kills while Maute added 10, including five in the first set as MSU posted a 25-23 win. Matlock had five in the second during a 25-15 and added six more in the third as the Red Hawks closed out the match with a 25-14 victory.
Matlock finished with 13 kills while Maute added five blocks. Senopoulos had eight kills as did April D'Angelo, who had five in the opening set.
KIMBERLY MATLOCK had 34 assists along with three aces and six digs. Senopoulos, Olcese and Griffith had nine digs apiece.
Montclair hit .337 for the match, including .417 (13 kills, 3 errors in 24 attempts) .417 in the second-set win and finished solid with a .367 hitting efficiency in the third set.
The Red Hawks return to action on Tuesday, September 15 with their New Jersey Athletic Conference opener. Montclair hosts the Ospreys of Stockton University at the Panzer Athletic Center at 7:00 pm.
