SHAUN RUSSELL provided a great spark off the bench with 24 points but it wouldn't be enough as Montclair State fell to Stockton University, 84-71 at the Stockton Sports Center on Wednesday evening.
Juniors
BRANDON CHANNER and
ERICK LOFTEN-HARRIS added 13 and 11 points respectively as the Red Hawks fell to 6-8 overall, 3-5 in the NJAC. Armin Cane scored a game-high 27 points along with eight rebounds for Stockton (10-5, 5-3 NJAC), which snapped a three-game skid.
Montclair State led for the first half of the opening period taking a 16-11 lead with 11:57 to play after
JAQUAE WILSON drained a three-pointer. The Ospreys answered with a 12-0 run with Cane putting back his own miss for a 23-16 Stockton advantage with eight-plus minutes to go. MSU would regain the lead with 2:48 left on two free throws by Russell however Jaymere Hadden connected with 1:17 remaining as the hosts led 32-31 at the break.
Stockton quickly boosted the lead to double digits in the second. Cane hit twice from behind the arc and Hadden added another triple making the score 41-31 with 17:55 showing. The lead would hit as high as 18 points on two occasions, the last at 53-35 before the Red Hawks mounted a comeback.
MSU embarked on a 23-8 run over the next six minutes to get within three as Russell connected on a three-pointer pulling Montclair State within 61-58 with 5:32 left. But Stockton countered with a 15-4 run over the next three minutes putting the game away for the Ospreys.
Senior
AARON WILLIAMS had 10 points and four rebounds off the bench for the Red Hawks. Channer,
BRIAN CROSBY,
DEVYN RANSOM and
JORDAN ROBERSON had five rebounds each for MSU.
Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, January 16 when it hosts New Jersey City University at the Panzer Athletic Center beginning at 1:00 pm.
