Montclair, NJ – Junior guard
RACHAEL KRAUSS scored 14 points hitting four times from behind the arc as Montclair State cruised to a 74-25 victory over New Jersey City University at the Panzer Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomores
YAZMINE LACEY and
ERICA SNOW each added 11 points off the bench as the Red Hawks (11-5, 7-2 NJAC) shut down the Gothic Knights (1-14, 0-9 NJAC) as it extended its current winning streak in the all-time series to 25 straight. Montclair has won 56 of the 59 all-time meetings.
Christine Bizub led NJCU with nine points as the Gothic Knights dropped their 12
th consecutive contest.
Montclair's defense smothered the NJCU offensive attack as it allowed the fewest points in a game since a season-opening 84-21 win over Brooklyn College on November 23, 2002. The Red Hawks limited the Gothic Knights to 22 percent (10-of-45) shooting and forced NJCU into 32 turnovers which Montclair State turned into 34 points.
The Red Hawks also held a huge 55-33 advantage on the glass, including 21 rebounds. Lacey led the way with eight followed by
KATIE SIRE who had seven.
SAGE BENNETT and
DOMONIQUE WIRSING collected seven apiece. Sire, Bennett, Wirsing and
ZOE CURTIS each had six points as all 13 players scored for MSU.
KIARRA DILLARD recorded four steals with
FAITH ASHBY and
TAYLOR HARMON making three as Montclair had 20 in the game.
The teams traded the first four baskets of the game before the Red Hawks put up the next seven points with Krauss and Bennett each hitting three-pointers for an 11-4 lead with 6:03 to play. Lacey hit two free throws with 1:32 left as Montclair State took a 17-8 lead after one quarter.
Sire opened the second quarter with a layup and five straight points from Snow pushed the lead to 24-10. Montclair would then score 14 of the final 15 points in the final 5:29 of the quarter. Krauss hit back-to-back three-pointers in the final two minutes as MSU led 38-11 at the break. NJCU went just 1-for-8 from the field in the second quarter and went the final 6:43 without making an attempt.
MSU returns to action on Wednesday, January 20 when it travels to Union, NJ to face Kean University in a 6:00 pm tipoff at the Harwood Arena.
