KAITLYN STRUSS scored off a long pass 7:20 into overtime as No. 17 Montclair State won its fourth straight, outlasting York College, 3-2 at Sprague Field on Saturday.
CAMILLE MAIMONE and
KELLY WATSON each had a goal as the Red Hawks captured the first meeting between the teams while upping its record to 13-4.
Sydney LaMarsh and Autumn Mallory each had a goal for the Spartans (11-5).
The Red Hawks got the early lead as Maimone, one of five seniors honored before the game, collected her second goal of the season. Off a penalty corner,
KAILEY DALGAUER picked up a loose ball in the circle and sent it out to the left wing for Maimone who launched a high-arching shot over the keeper and into the back of the cage for the 1-0 advantage 9:10 into the game.
That lead would hold up until the latter stages of the first half. Off play inside the circle, the ball came out to the top where LaMarsh smacked in a shot tying the game with 2:33 left in the first half. It was the first shot of the game for York, which nearly took the lead on its second attempt a minute into the second period. Alex Taylor ripped a shot from the left side that appeared headed in however Maimone made a diving stick save keeping the contest deadlocked.
MSU regained the lead at the 52:56 mark as Watson flicked a soft shot through a defender on the right post. MSU's
KAITLIN MAGUIRE made back-to-back stops against Mallory two minutes later but Mallory's third attempt went through as her rebound put back tied the game with 3:49 to play.
In the 7-v-7 overtime, Maguire made a stop against Lindsay Nye 59 seconds into the extra period. The teams went back and forth until three minutes remaining when MSU got the game-winner.
AMBER HASLETT lifted a high pass down toward the circle. Struss ran onto the pass and made her way around the defender before firing a shot into the right side for her 12
th of the year.
Maguire made five saves as did York's Eve Hauptle.
Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday, October 25 when it hosts FDU-Florham at Sprague Field beginning at 7:00 pm.
