Men's Soccer Beats NJCU, Clinches NJAC Tournament Berth

Terci Ties Career Goal Record

Montclair, NJ – Senior forward LUCAS TERCI had a hand in all three goals as Montclair State clinched a berth in the NJAC Tournament with a 3-1 victory over New Jersey City at MSU Soccer Park on Wednesday.

Senior MICHAEL CZYRNEK had a goal for the Red Hawks, who closed out the regular season on a winning note. MSU (13-5-1) finished 4-4-1 in league play claiming the No. 5 seed in the conference tournament which gets underway on Saturday, October 29. Montclair will travel to Camden, NJ to face No. 4 seed Rutgers-Camden at 1:00 pm.

The Red Hawks defeated the Scarlet Raptors 3-1 at MSU Soccer Park on September 24. The two also met last season in the NJAC title game with Rutgers-Camden capturing the championship in penalty kicks.

Adam Cassidy stopped eight shots for NJCU which closed out its season at 8-10-1 (0-9 NJAC) under first-year head coach and former Red Hawk All-American Joe Cullen.

Terci tied the MSU career mark for goals as he upped his season total to 24, just one behind the record of 25 set by John Ioannu in 1983. He tied the career mark held by Erik Neubart, who scored 59 goals from 1991-94.

Terci broke the scoreless tie at the 11:41 mark on a penalty kick after MATTHEW GOTRELL was taken down inside the box on the left side. Terci stepped up and buried the kick, his fifth make of the season and a 1-0 Montclair State lead.

MSU had chances to extend the lead however Cassidy made a pair of saves while Gotrell hit the post. NJCU's Davauni Brown got a chance to tie the game at 28:56 but his attempt was scooped up by MIKE SAALFRANK.

Terci played the role of playmaker on the second Red Hawk goal sending a pass from the top left corner of the box over to Czyrnek, who blasted in a shot from the top for his first goal of the year and a 2-0 MSU lead with 15:33 to go before halftime.

In the second half, Gotrell fired a shot from close range that hit the crossbar. However the carom bounced straight down to the ground where Terci was able to tap in giving the Red Hawks a 3-1 advantage in the 58th minute.

NJCU got one goal back just over four minutes later. Davauni Brown sent a ball from midfield down to the top of the box. Gabriel Luzbet was able to run on to it and off one bounce, popped it over the head of the keeper for his first of the season.

Saalfrank finished with three saves for MSU, which outshot the Gothic Knights 26-7.
