DAN KNEPPLE set a new pool record in the 1650 freestyle highlighting a a successful home opener as the Montclair State men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept past College of Staten Island at the Panzer Pool on Saturday. The Red Hawks each improved to 3-2 on the season as the men posted a 156-122 victory while the women downed the Dolphins 141-95.
Knepple became the new record holder in the mile swim as he led a 1-2 finish by MSU. Knepple swam 17:16.54 putting his name onto the record board in the facility.
MITCHELL LAYNE was second in the event at 17:35.37. Montclair would sweep the 1650 freestyle as
COURTNEY MUNRO took top honors in the event at 18:57.90.
MARTHA PENDER and freshman
MADISON FRANKE each won a pair of individual events in addition to helping the 200 medley relay team to victory. Franke won the 100 backstroke (1:02.70) in addition to taking the 500 freestyle (5:31.34). Pender was a winner in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events with times of 1:16.05 and 2:47.61 respectively. The two comprised the first two legs of the medley relay with
CHRISTINA CUSMANO and
MARGAUX WINCHOCK for a first-place time of 1:58.10.
Munro also collected a win in the 200 backstroke (2:17.57) with
ASHLEY SINGEWALD placing second at 2:29.42. Freshman
CLAIRE LUIGARD won twice taking first in the 200 freestyle (2:01.93) as she led a 1-2-3 MSU finish in the event. Cusmano (2:06.98) and
ERIN CANNON (2:08.43) were second and third. She later added a win in the 200 butterfly posting a time of 2:16.55 with Cusmano taking second at 2:34.85. Winchock was second in both the 100 backstroke (1:05.21) and 500 freestyle (5:31.62) with
NATALIE WALL doing the same in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.98) and 200 breaststroke (2:48.11).
The men got off on the right foot winning the 200 medley relay.
JAMES SINGEWALD, Knepple,
STEVEN ROTH and
CHARLES COBBERTT combined to post a time of 1:40.86.
HUNTER ROMANOWSKI led a Top 3 sweep of the 200 freestyle registering a time of 1:47.69. Cobbertt was second (1:50.21) with
ANTHONY SANTORO third (1:58.03).
JAMES SINGEWALD captured the 100 backstroke (54.62) while
DANIEL BORJAS claimed the top spot in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.98).
Romanowski's second win in came in the 100 freestyle (49.13) as he edged teammate
KEVIN GIBSON (49.95) for first place. Cobbertt (22.00) and
BRENDAN TURNER (23.71) were 1-2 in the 50 freestyle with Knepple adding a second individual win in the 200 breaststroke (2:19.63).
NICANDRO DONADIO (5:04.82),
FRANCIS PINO (5:11.26) and
ANTHONY KALAFATIS (5:15.97) finished off the day for MSU with a 1-2-3 placing in the 500 freestyle.
Montclair State returns to action next weekend at the three-day Franklin & Marshall Invite. The Red Hawks will be in action starting Friday, November 18 through Sunday, November 20.
