JOVANNI CHATHAM scored 12 points and handed out three assists however Montclair State dropped its second straight game falling to City College of New York, 85-64 in the Ollie Gelston Classic at the Panzer Athletic Center on Saturday.
Freshman
EDDIE EMEDOH scored nine points and grabbed three rebounds for the Red Hawks, who fell to 0-2 with the loss. Senior
BRANDON CHANNER, who finished with seven points and five rebounds was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Khalil Hamer and David Solano finished with 26 and 22 points respectively for the Beavers (1-2), who built a 14-point lead at halftime.
Three-pointers by
JARRETT BOGUS and Chatham staked the Red Hawks to a 6-0 lead which grew to 9-2 after
JORDAN ROBERSON put in a layup with 16:14 left in the opening half. The Beavers answered with 11 of the next 14 points and took the lead on Solano's triple making the score 13-12.
WIls Jazilek later connected on a short jump with 4:33 to go giving CCNY a 30-22 advantage and another three by Solano widened the margin to 36-25 with 80 seconds before halftime. Dardan Lahu added a three-point play and two foul shots by Hamer with five seconds left sent the Beavers into the locker room with a 41-27 advantage.
Montclair would get as close as 68-58 with four minutes remaining as Channer drained a three-pointer on the left side. But Mark Richards collected four of the next five points to push the lead back to 70-58.
JUSTIN PORTER had seven points for MSU, which struggled from the free throw line for the second straight contest. The Red Hawks were 9-of-24 at the stripe compared to 25-of-29 by CCNY. Roberson had five points and six rebounds.
Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday, November 22 with its NJAC opener at Kean University. The Red Hawks and Cougars square off at 8:00 pm in the back end of the conference doubleheader.
