Ewing, NJ – The Montclair State field hockey team's quest to capture its third New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship came up short at the second-seeded Red Hawks fell to top-seeded The College of New Jersey, 1-0 on Saturday.
The Lions (16-3) earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship and put the Red Hawks (16-5) on the bubble for an at-large berth.
Selections will be announced on Sunday, November 6 with first-round action slated for Wednesday, November 9.
TCNJ's Cayla Andrews broke a scoreless tie with 20:08 remaining taking a short pass from Elizabeth Morrison from the endline and knocking it into the back of the cage for her 12
th of the season.
Montclair, which had its six-game winning streak snapped, was held to two shots in the game however one turned out to be the best as Katilyn Struss got off a shot with 5:15 left in the first period. But that attempt was knocked away by Christina Fabiano.
Katilin Maguire finished with four saves for MSU.
The Red Hawks were making their four appearance in the championship game since the inception of the NJAC Tournament in 2011. It was the third time Montclair and TCNJ met for the conference crown with the Lions taking the inaugural championship in 2011 with MSU claiming the 2013 meeting.
