Newark, NJ – Junior guard/forward
KATIE SIRE registered a double-double with points and 11 rebounds as No. 14/18 Montclair State went on the road and posted a 62-49 victory over Rutgers-Newark at the Golden Dome on Saturday evening.
Senior guard
RACHAEL KRAUSS added 10 points and eight rebounds as the Red Hawk upped their record to 7-0 on the season, 3-0 in the NJAC. Maria Simmons scored a game-high 20 points for the Scarlet Raiders (1-5, 0-3 NJAC).
MSU never trailed in the contest and led by five after the first period.
SAGE BENNETT scored the first three points and a layup by Sire with 4:05 left gave Montclair a 10-6 advantage.
YAZMINE LACEY scored with 50 seconds before the first-quarter horn giving the Red Hawks a 12-7 lead after one period.
Freshman
ALEX MCKINNON widened the lead to 17-9 two minutes into the second with a three-pointer however a Shala Glenn bucker pulled Rutgers-Newark within 17-16 with 6:30 left. Sire added a jumper and a rebound and layup by
KATE TOBIE made the score 23-18. The Scarlet Raiders got back two points but Montclair scored the final six for a 29-20 advantage at the break.
Two three-pointers from
ZOE CURTIS and a layup by Tobie allowed MSU to take a 37-22 lead with seven minutes to go in the third. Rutgers-Newark closed within 48-42 early in the fourth however a pair of Sire jumpers sandwiched around a three by Curtis restored the lead to 55-42 with 7:21 remaining. The Raiders would only get as close as nine points the remainder of the game.
Curtis finished with 11 points and three assists while Tobie added nine points along with five assists. McKinnon recorded five pints and four rebounds.
Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, December 7 when its hosts local rival William Paterson at the Panzer Athletic Center. Tip-off of the NJAC contest is scheduled for 8:00 pm.
