Women's Lacrosse Topples No. 15 Fredonia, 10-8

Verrone Hat Trick, Paraggio and Lare Two Goals Apiece

Montclair, NJ – Junior FRANCESCA VERRONE scored three goals, including two key goals in the second half helping Montclair State past No. 15 Fredonia, 10-8 at Sprague Field on Sunday afternoon.

AVIANA PARAGGIO and Linsday Lare each scored a pair of goals as the Red Hawks moved to 2-1 on the year. Katie Kleine scored six times for Fredonia, which fell to 0-2 as the Blue Devils also lost to fifth-ranked The College of New Jersey 8-3 on Saturday.

Montclair jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the game's first eight minutes. Paraggio netted the first goal 1:51 into the contest and added her second two minutes later. Lare scored with 24:17 to go in the period before KASEY MAGUIRE tallied with 22:31 to play for the four-goal advantage.

Kleine cut the deficit in half scoring at the 10-minute mark of the half and then recorded a short-handed tally with 8:36 for a 4-2 MSU lead. NICOLE FRANCIS put back a shot that clanged off the crossbar with 2:29 left and Verone's goal with 51 ticks extended the lead to 6-2. Kleine tallied her third in the half with 20 seconds as MSU carried a 6-3 lead into the break.

The Blue Devils trimmed the lead to 6-5 early in the second half as Jade Williams and Kleine scored 26 seconds apart. CHELSEA ORBAN then came up with a huge play forcing a turnover on a Fredonia clear attempt with 18:35 to play. She scooped up the ground ball and then completed the trifecta with the goal igniting a three-score run by the Red Hawks. Verrone had both of those scores as MSU widened its lead to 9-5.

Williams and Kleine answered for the Blue Devils as the score shrunk to 9-7 with 8:12 to play. Lare countered a minute later for Montclair but Kleine's sixth goal with 4:28 left made it a two-goal contest again (10-8).

Fredonia would get a chance to close the gap further as Monica Van Donsel fired a shot with 44 seconds that was knocked away by REBECCA MYERS. EMILY WONG picked up the ground ball and the Red Hawks ran out the clock for the victory.

Maguire had two draws and two saves for MSU along with four ground balls while defender MEREDITH KING added two caused turnovers and three ground balls. Paraggio, SERENA HITCHINS, KARA CRAMPTON and Verrone each had two draws. Myers totaled seven saves for her first victory of the year.

The Red Hawks are now off until Saturday, March 5 when they travel to Pennsylvania to face Gettysburg College at 1:00 pm.
