Montclair, NJ – Senior
BRETT MANGAN scored with a minute remaining to force overtime and
COREY CARLSON won it 1:15 into the extra period as Montclair State won its second straight, beating Union College 12-11 at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.
Mangan scored four times as the Red Hawks upped their record to 3-5 with their first win in three tries against the Dutchmen (3-2) that included a loss in the 2012 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship.
Peter Richardson had two goals for Union.
A back-and-fort contests, Montclair took a 10-8 lead with 9:40 to play in the fourth as
RYAN TOTIN scored off an assist from Steven Danyluk. Union answered 66 seconds later on an unassisted tally by Tom Stanton and a goal by Paul Alberti two minutes later knotted the contest at 10-10. Charlie McGovern put the Dutchmen in front with 3:34 to go and Union got a huge save from Sam Bebout as he stopped
ZACH SCHRECK with 2:34 remaining.
Union cleared the ball from its defensive end and looked to run time off the clock. Montclair's
RYAN YOUNG caused a turnover with 1:50 left and
BRADY WULSTER scooped up the ground ball giving MSU a chance. Schreck got off a shot that went wide and Montclair got a break as the Dutchmen were flagged with 1:41 to play. Looking to take advantage of the extra-man opportunity, Mangan fired a shot that was stopped by Bebout with 1:13. Schreck kept the possession alive with the ground ball and passed to
DON FINN who then found Mangan for the tying goal with exactly a minute to play.
The Dutchmen won the ensuing faceoff and almost got the game winner with 23 seconds left but Alberti's shot hit the post.
In the overtime, Montclair won the faceoff as Blasé Mantineo registered the last of his 16 wins at the "X". Mangan tried to get off a shot in the middle but had the ball knocked away. Carlson became the right man in the right place at the right time, picking up the loose ball and flipping it into the back of the net for the game-winning tally.
DON FINN, Schreck (two assists) and Wulster each scored twice for MSU.
JACK CARDEW made 13 saves for Montclair State with Carlson adding three caused turnovers. Mantineo, 16-of-25 on faceoffs, recorded a team-best eight ground balls.
Montclair State is now off until Saturday, March 26 when it travels to Reading, PA to face Albright College at 1:00 pm.
