Montclair, NJ –Senior midfielder
ZACH SCHRECK scored three times while
CONNOR CUNNINGHAM and
BRADY WULSTER each netted a pair as Montclair State picked up its first win of the season with an 11-7 victory over Vassar College at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.
ALEX HAHN also scored twice for MSU which grabbed a three-goal lead after one period and rode that advantage improving to 1-2 on the season.
Brandon DeStasio scored three times for the Brewers, who fell to 1-1.
The teams traded the first four goals of the game as Cunningham put the Red Hawks on the board 2:19 into the contest before DeStasio tied it 15 seconds later.
DON FINN pushed Montclair back in front by DeStasio scored with 5:47 to play knotting the game at 2-2.
Hahn answered 43 seconds later as MSU went back on top and Schreck scored on the power-play less than a minute later for a 4-2 lead. Wulster closed out the period with his first goal and opened the second with another giving Montclair State a 6-2 lead with 10:18 to go before halftime. Chris Billups and DeStasio each scored in the latter half of the period helping Vassar close within 6-4 at halftime.
Montclair gained a little breathing room in the first three minutes of the third on man-up tally from
RYAN TOTIN and Schreck's second with 12:59 remaining. The 8-4 lead would be cut in half as Noah Parson and Dekker Stebel answered. Cunningham stopped the run with his second with 3:04 left and Schreck's third with four ticks allowed MSU to hold a 9-6 lead after three.
Billups second goal on the man-up got Vassar within 9-7 with 12:26 left in the fourth, however the MSU defense limited the Brewers to just two shots the rest of the way. Hahn sealed the game for MSU with 1:37 left on a power-play score.
LUCAS JONES stopped 10 shots for Montclair State which got another outstanding day from faceoff specialist
BLASE MANTINEO who was 14-of-19 with six ground balls.
STEVE DANYLUK matched Mantineo for team-honors in that category picking up six. Totin had five ground balls along with a caused turnover.
Brandon Crecco made nine saves for Vassar.
Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, March 5 with a tough task as the Red Hawks head to Upstate New York to face No. 3 RIT at 1:00 pm. It will be the second Top 5 team MSU will face in four games as Montclair lost to No. 2 Salisbury in its season opener on February 20.
