Softball Drops NJAC Doubleheader to Stockton 9-3 & 4-2

Stamile Two RBI for Montclair State

Montclair, NJ – Stockton University scored three runs in its final two at bats of the nightcap as the Ospreys pulled off a sweep of Montclair State at the MSU Softball Stadium on Sunday.

Stockton (17-7, 3-3 NJAC) posted a 9-3 win in the opener before completing the sweep with a 4-2 win in the second game. MSU, which has dropped six straight, fell to 14-10 overall, 0-6 in the NJAC.

The Ospreys scored in each of their first three at bats taking a 4-0 lead after Nicole Tomo lofted a sacrifice fly in the third inning. LIA STAMILE got Montclair State on the board in third with an RBI single and added another run batted in during the fifth helping the Red Hawks close the gap to 4-2.

But the Ospreys' Holly Arentowicz drove in two runs with a base hit during a three-run sixth with Danielle Lugo plating two more in the seventh giving the visitors a 9-2 advantage. LAUREN BOOTH collected an RBI for the final Montclair State run.

Samantha Shockey (7-4) got the victory as she allowed seven hits and three runs (two earned) with three strikeouts and a pair of walks. BROOKE POWERS (6-5) took the loss for MSU. Shockey, Arentowicz and Alexa Massa had two hits apiece for Stockton.

Arentowicz opened the second game with an RBI single in the first that was answered by Montclair in the bottom half as Powers drove in VICTORIA GEHRING with a ground out.
BRYANNA LUCIANO put MSU in the lead in the second with a single to centerfield that scored ALI WALEK, an advantage Montclair would hold onto until the sixth. Chelsea Thomas tied the game in the sixth with a single and RBI singles from Casey Schieda and Tomo in the seventh gave Stockton a 4-2 lead.

MSU threatened in the bottom of the seventh. LAUREN BOOTH singled with two outs and Walek was hit by a pitch. ALANA LUNA singled to load the bases however Hannah Bibeault got a fly out to end the game.

Bibeault got the victory in relief pitching five scoreless innings. She allowed seven hits, struck out two and walked one. SAM KEATING (5-4) took the loss for the Red Hawks.
Tomo went 4-for-4 for Stockton which had 11 hits in the game. Luna collected three hits with Booth and Gehring each getting two for MSU.

Montclair State will look to get back in the win column on Tuesday, April 12 hosting New Jersey City at the MSU Softball Stadium beginning at 3:00 pm.
