Camden, NJ – The Montclair State women's lacrosse team scored 11 of the 13 goals in the first half cruising to a 17-4 win over Rutgers-Camden in their regular-season finale on Saturday.
LINDSAY LARE and
FRANCESCA VERRONE each scored three times as the Red Hawk posted their fourth consecutive victory. Montclair is now 11-5 on the year and closed out its league slate at 4-2.
Montclair will be the No. 3 seed in the NJAC Tournament and will be at second-seeded Rowan University on Wednesday, May 4 in a semifinal matchup. It will be the third consecutive year that the two will meet in the conference tournament. Rowan has won both meetings, including a a 12-11 victory at Sprague Field last season.
Rutgers-Camden opened the scoring as Brenna Heifet scored on an unassisted goal 4:35 into the game. The Red Hawks then ripped off the next five goals, including four in four minutes. Verrone tied the game with 24:16 and Alex DiPiero scored 32 seconds later to put MSU in front. Lare scored back-to-back goals before
AVIANA PARAGGIO connected with 16:34 remaining for a 5-1 MSU advantage.
The Raptors' Cecillia Gross snapped the run with 15:51 to go however MSU closed out the half with the final six goals.
KASEY MAGUIRE got the first two before
SERENA HITCHINS scored for an 8-2 lead.
JESSICA ANDREULA followed with 7:33 to play with goals from
CHELSEA ORBAN and Paraggio extending the lead to 11-2 at halftime.
Montclair State increased its run to 11 straight with the first five scores of the second. Verrone bookended the run that lasted over the first 18 minutes of the period giving Montclair a 16-2 lead. Lare,
NICOLE FRANCIS and Hitchins each had goal in the spurt.
Hitchins and Maguire each finished with two goals and two assists while DiPiero tallied once along with two helpers. Ten different players scored at least once for the Red Hawks. Maguire and Verrone also posted three draws with senior
MEREDITH KING forcing a pair of turnovers to give her 46 for the season breaking the MSU single-season mark. King surpassed Dina Morrone's 2007 mark of 45.
ALEXANDRA TEPPER stopped seven shots.
